Sometimes, naked Beavers are a good thing. This time? Not so much. Tyler Patrick Thomas, an offensive lineman for the Oregon State Beavers, was kicked off the team after being arrested and charged with resisting arrest, criminal mischief and criminal trespass. The 19-year-old was discovered by police in a stranger’s house while clearly intoxicated and clearly naked. Thomas tried to tackle police using his football skills. The police responded by using a taser guns on him and hauling him away. He has since been released from Benton County jail. From Kalispell, Montana, Thomas redshirted last year for the Beavers. Interestingly enough, his brother (Connor Thomas), has committed to play for Oregon State next season. Mike Riley, the head coach of the Beavers, has reportedly told Connor that his brother getting arrested doesn’t change his status with the team. Let’s hope that the brother Beaver remembers to stay clothed if he breaks into a random person’s home. Post from: EveryJoe

What are the Washington Nationals thinking? Prized rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg is undergoing a second MRI to determine why he has pain in his forearm. With the Nationals sitting at 53-72 and 20 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, it should be an easy call to shut down Strasburg for the season. Strasburg has one of the most amazing arms ever seen on the big league level. His stuff is spectacular and he has a chance to be an all-time great. But he will only reach his potential if the Nationals are smart with him and the smart move right now is to shut him down. This is actually the second injury that Strasburg has had this season. Earlier in the year, he went on the DL with a shoulder issue. When he’s pitched, he’s been very good. Strasburg is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA. He has 92 strikeouts in only 68 innings. It’s understandable that Strasburg would want to keep pitching. Part of the reason why he’s so good is because he’s a competitor. That said, the 22-year-old and the Nationals need to see the big picture. Shut it down, come back next season and continue to adjust that ungodly arm to the grind of the major league schedule. Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets have agreed to a new deal that will be announced on Wednesday. Considering that Revis is regarded as one of the top five defensive players in the NFL, this is huge news for the Jets and their fans. The source of this news is Tim Cowlishaw’s Twitter . The Jets were a great defensive team last year, with a lot of the credit going to Revis. He’s a cover corner who can lock up the opponent’s best wide receiver with minimal help. That ability allowed the Jets to send a lot of pressure at the quarterback and send double-teams to the other side of the field. While there are no details of Revis’s deal, expect him to become one of the highest paid defensive players in the league. Speaking of the Jets, Nick Mangold and the team are also getting close to a long-term extension. The All-Pro center will reportedly become the highest paid center in the NFL. Lou Piniella was expected to step down at the end of the baseball season. Instead, the Chicago Cubs manager decided to retire on Sunday. He said that spending time with his mother is his main motivation. Said Piniella: “My mom needs me home and that’s where I’m going.” Managing his final game, the Cubs lost to the Atlanta Braves by a final count of 16-5. “It’s a good day to remember,” remarked Piniella, “and also it’s a good day to forget.” Piniella began his baseball career in 1962. He spent 18 years as a player before managing for another 23 years. During his time in the big leagues, Piniella won three World Series rings. For the final 38 games, Mike Quade will manage the Cubs. Quade was formerly the team’s third base coach. All the other coaches will remain the same for the rest of the season. However, at the end of the season, expect the 51-74 Cubs to make wholesale changes. Lou Piniella says goodbye to baseball (Image: TSN.ca) Post from: EveryJoe

At the 2008 Olympics, Team USA was a machine. This year’s squad is smaller, less skilled and less experienced … and thus, much less dominant. That lack of domination was apparent on Sunday when the United States barely got past Spain by a final score of 86-85. Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose made big plays down the stretch after Spain had taken an 82-80 lead. Durant led Team USA with 25 points, who played this exhibition game in Spain. Next, the squad heads to Athens to play the Greece national team. Despite the close call, the Americans were happy with their play. Said Durant: “It was one of those games that was a learning experience for us and I think we made key plays down the stretch. We also played as a team and stuck through tough times.” Spain, who is considered one of the top three basketball teams in the world, has a number of NBA-quality players. Juan Carlos Navarro led the way for Spain with 20 points, while Marc Gasol totaled 17 points and six rebounds. Rudy Fernandez, Jose Calderon, Ricky Rubio, Fran Vazquez, Jorge Garbajosa and Sergio Llull are other players on Spain that NBA fans are familiar with. A sad story is developing in Bradenton, Florida where Mikhail Torrance is in critical condition. Torrance just finished a fabulous senior season at Alabama and had recently signed a contract to play pro basketball in Israel. Many NBA draft experts thought Torrance would be selected in the 2010 NBA Draft, however he went undrafted. Torrance and people around him blamed a red flag in his medical files — an enlarged heart. Although the NBA cleared him to play basketball, no NBA team decided to take the risk. And now, the risk has apparently been shown to be real. It hasn’t been confirmed that Torrance’s heart is to be blamed but all the signs point to that being the case. About five minutes into a light basketball workout, Torrance collapsed to the ground. He fell so hard and fast that his head slammed to the ground. Let’s hope Torrance will recover his health. Here is a Mikhail Torrance highlight video: Post from: EveryJoe

In each of the last three months, unemployment dropped in at least 30 states. In the latest numbers, only 18 states saw unemployment drop. In other words, the economy’s momentum has started to sputter. In fact, unemployment numbers grew in 14 states. Looking at the United States as a whole, unemployment remained steady at 9.5%. For the first time in four years, Michigan actually didn’t have the nation’s highest unemployment rate. That “honor” instead went to Nevada, which has a 14.3% unemployment rate compared to Michigan’s 13.1%. California rounds out the bottom three with a rate of 12.3%. Are you looking for a job? North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska are hiring. Each of those three states have unemployment rates lower than 4.8%. Economists are split about what’s ahead. Some believe that there is job growth and that the U.S. is headed in the right direction. Others, however, believe the next few months could present even harder times. Leaving Nevada might be a good idea (Image: Flickr) Post from: EveryJoe
