What are the Washington Nationals thinking? Prized rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg is undergoing a second MRI to determine why he has pain in his forearm. With the Nationals sitting at 53-72 and 20 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, it should be an easy call to shut down Strasburg for the season. Strasburg has one of the most amazing arms ever seen on the big league level. His stuff is spectacular and he has a chance to be an all-time great. But he will only reach his potential if the Nationals are smart with him and the smart move right now is to shut him down. This is actually the second injury that Strasburg has had this season. Earlier in the year, he went on the DL with a shoulder issue. When he’s pitched, he’s been very good. Strasburg is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA. He has 92 strikeouts in only 68 innings. It’s understandable that Strasburg would want to keep pitching. Part of the reason why he’s so good is because he’s a competitor. That said, the 22-year-old and the Nationals need to see the big picture. Shut it down, come back next season and continue to adjust that ungodly arm to the grind of the major league schedule.
