Event Recap: Uncharted 3 AMC Theaters Los Angeles

Oly, Kane, and I were lucky enough to get hooked up with Premium Passes and attend the biggest Uncharted 3 AMC theaters event in L.A. This L.A. show had most of the cast in attendance. The 4 hour event started with registration, where they verified your identity, gave you a badge, and a card that contained a validation code for a free copy of the game. The UC3 game will be shipped to us one week before release! You had to register your address onsite using the card. Soon after registering, we started to mingle around with the talent that was there. We got a couple of pictures and posters signed, by most of the crew. From right to left, Nolan North, Emily Rose, Amy Hennig, Gordon Hunt, Robin Atkin Downes,Claudia Black, T.J. Ramini, Greg Edmonson. The Naughty Dog crew who were presented by an over zealous announcer, were on hand showing single player gameplay footage, and a bunch of trailer re-runs re-formatted in 3D. There was also a point where Nolan North came up to pitch his book coming out soon on Amazon. After a question and answer period with the talent, a tournament commenced consisting of 5 person teams, each randomly selected. So if you brought your clan with you, you were basically screwed because they built the team up with random strangers. I got stuck with team “Drake”, which was the first team to be eliminated, because honestly, my team was a “Noob”. I ended the game 9/4, and defeated, by Oly’s team. Kane112′s team also lost their first match. There were a total of 16 teams, playing with 5 minute rounds, or first to 30 kills, rules. Oly got all the way to 3rd place with his team “Sully”, where he got his only kill, yet a game winning kill, by dropping a grenade upon his death. So the rest of the night we were treated with free food from the concession stand with VIP meal cards. There was also a drawing for different prizes between each tournament match. Overall I give the event a 5 out of 5 because of the overall cleanliness, friendliness, and organization. There was no official meet and greet with the talent but it was so good to see them interact with fans on a personal level. No words can describe how talented and amazing this group of people are! A big thank you and appreciation to Sony, Naughty Dog, AMC theaters, and the staff at the event, for giving us a memorable experience!

Rayman Origins New Trailer and Q&A With Game Director Sebastien Morin

Cheeto just informed us of the upcoming Collectors Edition for Rayman Origins, and here is a new trailer for the game, followed by a Q&A With Game Director Sebastien Morin after the jump. Q&A With Game Director Sebastien Morin The fight system is very different from the first Rayman game, where possibilities of eliminating an enemy were much more limited. Can you talk about that? In the first Rayman, the fight system was revolving around a simple attack: the charge attack. It created a simple and interesting tradeoff for the player: The more you waited, the farther you would attack. It worked great, but it was static. In this game, we’ve decided to make it more fast-paced. We naturally sought out attacks that kept your momentum, so that you could keep chaining acrobatic moves, never stopping. Jump, slap, land, spin, run on the wall and kick some ass! It’s exhilarating. So for every platforming move we had to invent way to defeat enemies without stopping the flow of the game. That’s where all the richness comes from. How did you come up with so many moves and combos? Our goal was to have players with very different skill sets be able to enjoy the flow of a platformer. So we came up with different moves for different skills. Begin with little punch, learn to kick in the air, and when you’re good enough just sprint your way spinning and taking out the bad guys. Additionally, we accidentally (not really) discovered that slapping your friends was even more fun. So the set of attack moves just grew dramatically with all those new and creative ways to annoy your friends. Can you tell us what is your favorite move and why? The kick in the air is my favorite, it never feels old. This move is central to the design of the game. It’s the key move in the learning process, one that transforms a regular platform player into an actual ninja. Do the different playable characters have different attacks? Yes there are subtle differences between each playable character, because we wanted each to feel unique. Since they have the same set of moves, it’s easy to switch from one to another when you feel like it. Do the different enemies have particularities in the way they attack and in the way to eliminate them, as in the first Rayman game? With this vast attack set, we allow the player to be quite creative. As the game progresses, enemies become more and more challenging against specific attacks. Everything is still possible, but at your own risk. Also, keep an eye out for some of the domino-like situations we have set up throughout the game. Players can really maximize the result of their attacks, strategically taking out several enemies in one shot! There is no health bar in the GUI, how does the health system work in the game? A health bar didn’t feel right in a game where you might lose all those hard earned “health points” by falling into a pit. So it was natural to limit those, and a great opportunity to get rid of the GUI. Instead we took the bubblizing approach. If you take a hit or fall into a pit you turn into a bubble. You can be revived by one of your co-op partners with a simple punch or jump. We also have placed hearts throughout the game which allow you to take a hit without turning into a bubble. Those will come in handy during some of the really challenging maps. Sometimes, we can see lums coming out of enemies, either when we hit them or when we jump on their bubble. How does that work exactly? In a nutshell, Lums are your score. We thought it made sense to reward the player with a lum for a well-executed slap in the face. However, that was not enough, especially in co-op mode. If your friend is running ahead, you are left with fewer opportunities to kick ass. So Michel came up with the idea to bubblize enemies. It was great, because all of a sudden lagging players could finish those bad guys, and earn one of those happy lums too. Rayman Origins will ship November 15th Source: Press Release

The Impossible Game – Review (minis)

The best-selling indie hit The Impossible Game comes to PlayStation®3 system and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system! Jump your way through the levels, where any mistake sends you back to the beginning – with an awesome soundtrack you’ll quickly become addicted! Simple controls – time your jumps to perfection with just one button to guide your orange square through the levels. As well as the original levels and level packs, this version of The Impossible Game also contains a new level exclusive to PlayStation® platforms, making it the definitive version and a must-buy for fans of the series. • Rhythm-based platformer game. • Great retro graphics. • Practice Mode – lay checkpoints along the way to practice your timing. • Stats page and Medals – show off your achievements! The Impossible Game… what an excellent name for the game. Really nails down the feeling and it DOES come pretty close to being impossible. But it’s a lot of fun! Everything starts slowly and since you only need to hit one button to jump you figure… how hard can this be? Well, the first level? Took me 78 attempts to complete. I actually made it until attempt 33 before caving in and using “Practice Mode” so I could finish it. In this mode you press R or Triangle to set down a flag which acts as a continue point for when you die (yes, that is a when and not an “if you”. You’ll die. A LOT) and should you feel adventurous you can delete your flag by pressing the L button but if you die you’ll go baaaaaack to the start of the level. Finishing while in practice mode does unlock the next level (thank you!) BUT you miss out on the special medals awarded for completing a level in one go. At least we get a shiny “Completed in Practice Mode” medal for our puny performance. Music plays a huuuge part in being able to get to the end since music and level synchronize as one. When the beat drops so does the level layout (metaphorically speaking). Playing with headphones is a must since it allows you to focus on the visuals while at the same time allowing the music to enter your brain and never leave again. I unlocked my first medal (make 999 jumps) at around attempt 60 on Level 1 which gave me enough of a confidence boost to complete the level before shoving my PSP across the room. Ok, I TOTALLY tried to do it but since I was wearing headphones it didn’t go very far and fell right in front of me without any harm to either said portable or my physical form. Stats help you keep track of the total number of jumps made, total number of attempts and exact progress made on each stage (with separate tracking for Normal and Practice Mode) so you always know how far along you’ve come thanks to the blood, sweat and tears left in the battlefield. You do get better with practice as I was able to do the next level in 63 attempts (with flags) as it was a “variation” on Level 1 (called Original which might mean is the first level ever created for the game) and the one right after it in 57 attempts. Then again, levels get harder by a factor of “x8″ once you get into the next level and my total number for attempts before finishing the level was a very respectable… 206. A new element was included in this level that threw me off for a bit: the level flips upside down! Everything else is still the same and the controls don’t change but having the cube “jump down” messes around with your perception for a bit. How do you solve this? Well, you just flip the PSP itself upside down (sorry PS3 only users!) if any section is giving you trouble and then just pause and return it to it’s original position until such a drastic action has to be taken again. Level 3 took me 420 attempts and you can imagine how big the number was for level 4. Suddenly, blocks, spikes and everything nice start to pop up out of nowhere which reduces your time to react to said obstacles from 1.5 seconds to 0.75 (or by half, whatever is easier for you to wrap your head around) and THEN is when the game gets even more fun! The Impossible Game. For those times when Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls are not a masochistic enough (but fun) experience. Review Pros Cons Hectic and fun game Anyone can beat it with practice Finishing a level in a single run without flags IS very close to impossible Rating 87% Published and Developed by GripGames Cost – $2.99 Other Information Disclaimer – A copy of the game was provided by the publisher for this review. – Game was completed before writing this review. – Total amount of time played: 3 hours.
