Dark Souls Prologue Trailer: Part 1
If there isn’t another big home console for a few years, and the Vita delivers the roughly PS3 level hardware performance that Sony is claiming, why would people stick with home systems? Console gaming is the last non-portable holdout in the entire consumer electronics industry. Years ago, desktop computer users swore they would never trade in their desktops for laptops because they were so accustomed to laptops being so much worse than desktops. But as soon as laptops were good enough, desktop users did exactly that and made the switch. In the past and the present, portable consoles have been dramatically worse for most types of games than home consoles. Most people view them as completely separate industries where people play completely different types of games. Today, home console gamers play tons of FPS/TPS type games, and while those games exist for portables, they are basically garbage that almost no one plays. The Vita seems like it will be the first device to really change this dynamic and you will actually be able to play the same types of games at nearly the same quality that you would play on a non-portable system. A big trend is the rise of smartphone and tablet devices. While some gaming is definitely going in that direction, particularly games that work well with touchscreen/tilt controls and don’t need cutting edge technology, there is still a need for dedicated gaming hardware. Some games really benefit from gaming-centric controls (analog sticks, face and shoulder buttons, d-pad, motion wands, and soon VR type head tracking). Additionally, gaming centric hardware provides higher gaming optimized performance at mass market price points and has less fragmentation than the smartphone/tablet space does. But with the Vita, you have the benefits of a dedicated gaming platform, but also the portability that consumers want. If Vita really does let you play the big console games of 2012 at roughly the same quality that you would experience on a home console, why wouldn’t consumers migrate towards the portable option?

ATLUS just release this great trailer for Rock of Ages, “a balls-to-the-walls game of tower offense featuring fast-paced strategy, high art, and gigantic boulders of doom slated for digital release for the PlayStation 3 sometime after August 31, 2011. “The “Rock Beats Everything” trailer is both a tribute to gaming history and also a great sampling of Rock of Ages’ zany, over-the-top humor. Releasing today alongside the new trailer is a batch of gorgeous new screenshots, offering up stunning vistas, ground-shaking collisions, and some of the breathtaking visual design and brilliantly integrated classic art history that has helped garner buzz and excitement for the game.” Check below for some great screenshots. Rockstar’s long awaited project (Agent) had been in development for a few years now. It had been a mystery to everyone in the gaming community, until now. A former Rockstar artist (Leigh Donoghue) working on the game released images of Agent via an online portfolio . Rockstar didn’t release any comments regarding the leaked photos. Agent was originally planed to be release for PlayStation, but there is no conformation if it will remain a PS3 exclusive. Images after the jump.

I think it’s safe to say most of us are very excited about the (unfortunately delayed) PS Vita launch, but apparently that’s not how Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour, developers at Heavy Iron Studios, feel. (on a side note, this studio is mostly responsible for adaptations from movies like Up, Wall-e, Incredibles and Ratatouille according to wikipedia ) These guys are really questioning the sales price of the product saying that “if people aren’t willing to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS why would they pay $299 for Vita?”. These guys believe mobile gaming is the future because “people don’t want to carry more than one thing in their pocket, that’s why Android and iPhone have done so well, they are the devices of choice, they offer multiple functions outside of gaming” Personally, I feel like he’s not talking about “hardcore gaming” and is mostly focusing on casual games, take this for example “The technology is sweet, I’m a huge fan of mobile technology, but I just don’t know there’s a market out there anymore for the hardware. I can’t see why you would want to put a device out that only does games”. What is the importance of the casual gamer in console sales numbers? That’s a question I feel would really help in this discussion, but I wonder if someone could even come up with such number. While I see the point he’s using, I’ll have to disagree because I don’t think people would use the PS Vita as a mobile phone even if it had the capacity to do so. It’s too big and awkward for that. Also, no other mobile device is capable of handling what the Vita will be able to. What do you guys think, is the Vita going to have a future similar to Nintendo’s 3DS or will it prevail in this time of multitasking? source

Is the PS Vita “a car wreck”?
After some really weird screenshots that left most of us wondering what is this game all about, it’s now time for the Debut Trailer, which might leave us with even more questions. Well, still no word on why she has a head attached to her leg apparently; and what is this secret they’re talking about? I’ll tell you, this trailer left me intrigued and the soundtrack really pleased me. Sex, Blood and Rock & Roll? Count me in!

Recap Been busy again, but I have been around doing stuff for the Community. With that said, this was one of the busiest periods for us as far as giveaways goes, as you will see in the Community News tab. Currently, we have two giveaways happening with another one starting tomorrow. You can quickly access them by clicking on contest banners between post and at the top of articles. We’ve had a number of reviews for you to check out as well, with a few of them happening in conjunction with a giveaway. Thanks goes out to all those PR people for providing us with content! It is much appreciated! I guess Oly gets some credit, too, but we all know people will only associate with Oly because it gets them closer to me . I kid. With that said, EdEN and Cheeto need to settle down with the posting. Especially EdEN and his tyrannical posts about how a 3DS price drop is throwing the gauntlet against the Vita, and how it’s a better system than the Vita, blah blah blah. I don’t know how he got a staff position. Heck, he still hasn’t changed his name to his first name to continue on with site tradition . At least Eddie has been putting him in his place. Too bad EdEN doesn’t stay there for even 5 minutes before he starts again. Anyway, be sure to check out the rest! Quite a few articles to go through in case you missed anything! Community News & Game Nights It’s been a really busy past three weeks. One of the biggest things is definitely the giveaways, which you can read about in the section below. As far as Community news itself goes, Tosh has unveiled the new and improved giveaway/lottery system. It not only makes it easier for us to track entries, but also makes it easier for you to enter the contest as well. Yesterday, Tosh also gave me more permissions for running the forums, so I took the liberty of beginning the process of improving the forums . For the most part, the forums are now categorized satisfactorily, but we’re still in the process of moving old topics to their new locations. And, as always, we had our BlogCasts. Now available are Episode 11 , Episode 12 , and Episode 13 . Enjoy! Oh, and I almost forgot, EdEN has joined our team . Congratulations! Alright, giveaways! First of all, we had a winner for the Tekken blu-ray. The day before the winner of that was announced, we started a giveaway for PSN imports for Yakiniku Bugyou and Rapid Angel, where, later, everyone who entered had won. In fact, you can ask Oly if there are any extra codes left since the number of entries was less than the number of available codes… Anyway, Eddie did a short giveaway for a Resistance 3 beta code, here you can see who won here . We still had a couple other PSN giveaways, including Fast Draw Showdown and LIMBO . Winners can be seen here and here respectively. Of course, it didn’t end there. Currently, we have 2 more giveaways going on, including the PSN title Dead Block and a piece of hardware that makes a wired connection through your house’s electrical circuit, the HP200AV . We’re still not done yet, though. In fact, we had to make a couple more “lottery” accounts to allow for more giveaways, with the third account being used for a giveaway you will see go live tomorrow , so stick around! There is a lot of free stuff you can win! Also, Tosh’s E3 swag giveaway has ended, but items will be shipped soon! The ‘Kind of’ Weekly Recap (July 24th-August 13th)
Counter Strike, that shooter you played online on PC back in 1999 and one of the titles with the biggest sales of the past decade is getting a remake! Valve is developing an updated title of this famous shooter for PSN, LIVE and PC to be released sometime in 2012. According to Valve, Global Offensive will feature new maps, character, weapons, global leaderboards and gameplay modes. Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at valve, talked about the development of this new/updated online shooter: “For the past 12 years, Counter Strike continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.” The game will be playable at PAX Prime this month and at Eurogamer Expo 2011!

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Announced
I’m still continuing the tradition of getting a caricature done for official writers of PS3Blog.net, this is something that Henning (aka Blackstaffer) started. In the past 2 months EdEN has reviewed 12 games for PS3Blog.net which is an impressive feat. I enjoy reading his reviews; it’s like I’m right there playing the game. I’m looking forward to more reviews and posts from EdEN in the future. He joined the site on February 4th, 2010 and his first post was in September 2010. He quickly climbed the points later and currently sits at the number #7 spot. He’s also known as the Resident Nintendo Nutjob on PS3Blog.net but he also loves the PS3. It was a long time coming but now he’s officially part of the team. His bio is after the jump. You can also view it on the about us page. Welcome aboard EdEN! EdEN – Contributing Editor UTC -8 I am lawyer, hear me roar! EdEN here, Resident Nintendo Nutjob extraordinaire and owner of Sony products around his place. Started to get my gaming fix back in the day thanks to the awesomeness of Pong Home Consoles (one game only… and we liked it!) before moving on to the Atari 2600 for a couple of years and then graduating to the NES and never looking back. What consoles and portables do I own you say? Here, let me tell you them! I’ve got and Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, PSX, PSX Slim, Dreamcast, GC, PS2, PS2 Slim, 2 Wii and a PS3 on the console front and a GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, GB Micro, DS, DS Lite, DSi and PSP 3000 on the portable side of gaming. 900 games strong and counting with a backlog of over 100! I believe in giving every game a fighting chance and try to keep a lot of variety in the list of games I review or that I play just for fun (without a deadline!) and know that having other consoles options is great for the gaming industry as competition always bring the best in people (just ask all olympic athletes and hobos). I work hard for my money (so you better treat me right!). What do I spend that money on? The usual: food, clothes, cosmic cubes, clothing, gas, miniature tyrannic overlords, electricity and lots of hobbies. Comic books, DVDs and Blurays (new technology is always welcome) mostly, as well as lots of figurines and statues and original comic pages acquired during the yearly pilgrimage to the doors of the San Diego Comic Con to leave my offering of $5,000 in several $20, $50 and $100 bills all tied with a blood red bow to please the gods. Running out of space at my place so I think I’ll have to get rid of most of our furniture to make room for all my essential purchases in the years to come!
