With the growing rumors implying that Sony’s and Microsoft’s next consoles may being revealed within the next year or so, I’m beginning to wonder just what it will cost to purchase software on these new systems. The price for video games has increased with the introduction of every new home console over the years. Back in the day games for the PS1 cost $40, the price for PS2 titles increased to $50 and today a brand new PS3 game will set you back $60. See the trend? Assuming the price for a new console game will set you back $70 will gamers finally ask how much is too much? If the next gen gaming experience is anything like what we’re seeing today – single player campaigns only lasting 6-8 hours, extra content that could easily fit in the game being offered later as paid dlc, online passes- will it be worth it? The first next generation machine we actually know will release in 2012, the Nintendo Wii U, may give us an idea on what we can expect from the future of software pricing. Games on the Nintendo Wii are usually priced at $50, this includes AAA titles like the newly released Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. In comparison a big AAA title on either the PS3 or 360 will set you back $60. The $10 difference is partially due to the fact that the Wii doesn’t offer the same kind of high definition graphics that the PS3 and 360 does. What does this have to do with the Wii U? doesn’t According to reports the Wii U is expected to be as powerful as current HD systems which could indicate that software for the console will cost more than its predecessor. If it does this could be a good preview of just how much more we’ll be paying for games on the PS4 and next Xbox. On the other hand if you listen to the analysts who assume that the digital age, made popular by the iPhone, Kindle and other similar devices, will soon replace disc format in home consoles then perhaps that may offset the cost of video game software. But the probability of that happening is unclear at this point since my crystal ball is still in the shop. We do know that Nintendo won’t be relying on digital downloads as the sole format in the Wii U and I’m going to make the bold prediction ( without my crystal ball ) that neither Sony nor Microsoft plans to ditch the disc based format in their next systems. So come 2013 or 2014 when the next big gaming machine launches, how much will you be willing to spend on video games?

Hello everyone. If you’re not one with a twitter account yet, you better start one. Twitter has become a major source of industry reveals, giveaways, beta access code giveaways. Sometimes even free trips to conventions or free swag direct from companies. It is also a tool for which producers like Hideo Kojima @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN use to tease us with upcoming game content. So far we are all looking forward to Metal Gear Solid: Rising, however we have the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection to hold us over for now. As seen here in one of Mr. Kojima’s non stop tweets, a shot presumably from his iPhone, trophies from the upcoming MGS HD collection. Metal Gear Solid HD collection is due on November of this year, while Metal Gear Solid: RIZING is due out on 2012.

An interesting inquiry based on the doom and gloom stories we have been reading across the net about how smartphones, iPads and tablets will usurp the mobile gaming crown and push out dedicated mobile gaming devices such as the Playstation Vita and the 3DS. I can’t take credit for posing this question among gamers as that belongs to Labadal who posted this question on NeoGaf . It’s not often I will take part of the interwebz circle that seems to follow the GAF > NET > GAF phenomenon, but I decided to take the data from this question and put it in easy to swallow numbers. I read each and every reply to this thread and kept a detailed tally of the 292 answers. 59% answered Yes! These current owners of portable technology still see value in the Vita and what it offers. This actually struck me as odd because I really did believe that smartphone/tablet gaming was slowly taking over. There is a substantial difference between the bite sized games we get on smartphones vs dedicated gaming devices such as the 3DS or the Vita. 24% said No. The most interesting part of this crowd who did not find the Vita a worthwhile purchase, made it clear that their smartphone/tablet gaming had no affect on their decision. Well I suppose I should say the majority as a few did say the iPhone was enough for them but we are talking only 5 or 6 responses that agreed with that. 17% said Maybe . Most were clear that they had interest with the right types of games. A few said they would follow the JRPG’s, a few more said they would follow new IP’s, etc. Some pretty much said that they didn’t want to be the 1st to buy a new hardware and wanted to give it some time to grow or die before they decided to make a purchase We have to understand that the control group for such a poll is a little skewed since it was made up of almost entirely core gamers I would say. However what this does tell me is that smartphones, iPads and tablets may not be taking away from the mobile gaming market but instead, growing it in several directions. Creating the right hardware accompanied with the right software will always take hold and flourish with the right price points and marketing. There will always be people who disagree and spread the doom and gloom stories but taking a step back and trying to look at the whole view…even in little chunks such as this one could give you a a little more truth to the tale.

A game that has been available for the iPhone for a while is now the subject of a port to the PSN minis range of games thanks to Grip Games and SuperMono Studios. MiniSquadron is best described as and old school flavored 2D shoot-em-up that is contained within a few screens worth of space and has you going back and forth knocking down wave after wave of enemy planes. MiniSquadron is a frantic shooter involving lots of little planes vying for the supremacy of the skies! The player takes control of one of his airplanes and has to battle for the victory, using crazy weapons and incredible aerial stunts! Key features of MiniSquadron include: · 8 worlds, each one including 12 intense waves of enemies. · A massive arsenal of weapons, including super-awesome mega-laser. · Over 50 planes to unlock, containing jet planes, alien aircrafts and a flying panda. · Stunning graphics & art. Game should be made available during one of the PSN store updates for february and we’ll probably have a review of MiniSquadron here at ps3blog.net around the same time.

Recently Craneballs Studios released Blimp: The Flying Adventures on the PSP, and even though I tried this game out on the iPhone first, I was interested to see how the game stacked up on the PSP. But before I do that, first let me bring you up to speed on what you’re getting yourself into. A long time ago in a galaxy pretty far far away, there was a planet called Solbot, it was a great strategic outpost in the galaxy and so the power hungry aliens from the planet Tarra who by the way look a lot like the Helghast, well except they have green eyes not red attacked it. The current inhabitants weren’t having any of it so they drove them back with the help of Zed Pelin. Zed Pelin did what he could and because of his help he became a captain. He’s kind of like Jack Sparrow except he steers a Blimp. Now the Tarraians think it’s payback time and are back at it again… I think one of the very first things that you will notice about this game when playing it, are the graphics. It didn’t take me long to get lost in the game due to the vibrant colors, detail and the hand drawn art. This really seems to show in the jungle levels where you see a lot of vegetation, toxic barrels, and red piercing eyes that are glaring at you. The controls in this game couldn’t be easier. You use the analog stick to steer your ship left or right, the X button to give the blimp hot air so that it can increase its altitude and the L1/R1 for dropping bombs, or the elite. The game comes with three difficulty settings, easy, medium, and hard. On the easy difficulty setting you really don’t have to worry about much except for hitting walls which gives you damage, getting shot out of the sky by turrets, and a few other elements within the game. On medium and hard it gets a little bit trickier, as these two modes only give roughly 3 minutes to complete your mission or else you fail. Now throw in bumping walls, getting shot at, and several of the other elements within the game and you can have yourself a party. That’s not to say you can’t get several extra seconds by picking up some extra time, health and even gems to raise your score so that you can brag to your friends or the world how much better you are than them on the leader boards. There are 20 missions in total, which span across the globe taking you on a roller coaster of missions as you transport workers, chemists, the elite on secret missions as well as collect materials to get ready for a fight against an alien race that thinks it’s go time. On your journey you will travel through several locations in the Jungle, Sky, Snow Mountains, and even through the cover of night. All of this along, with the catchy soundtrack really helps to bring the game together. The only things that I have a problem with are that some of the items will spawn in locations that it’s impossible to reach for example behind a wall that you can see but can’t get too. Also the tight spaces in the later levels can become frustrating as you are trying to maneuver around while getting blasted, and the fact that there really isn’t anything added to the game from the iPhone is some what of a disappointment. With the millions of users that have an iPhone/iPod why would I get this game for $5 which is still a cheap price when I can have it for 99 cents? Review Pros Cons Only $5 Nice Soundtrack Fantastic Art Well polished Can get a little frustrating in later levels No multi Not really different from iPhone/iPod Rating 75%

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything, and with parental duties taking over at the moment, the first chance I get to do something for myself and I decided to write about a major gripe I have with the PS Store. I personally don’t know of many that have experienced the issue I faced not so long ago, but I do know after googling around that this is something that has existed ever since the PS3 was launched back in 2006/7. So, what was the issue? Well, just before PS Move came out (yes, it was that long ago), I decided to purchase Flight Control HD as it was a game I was quite addicted to on my iPhone, and with the game having Move compatibility I was completely sold on having it. So I decided to purchase it the day it came out on the PS Store. As normal, I continued to go through my purchase on the store and BAM! Your credit card details are invalid. Err….hang on – invalid! WT#? I had made many a purchase without changing my CC details on my PS account but why the error message?? So I decided to double check the details. Ok – no problem here, let’s try again and purchase FC HD. Was the system having it. Nope! Even though all my details were correct – including my card details, I was being told I couldn’t buy FC HD! After multiple attempts of re-entering my personal and CC details I got rather pee’d off. So, what next? I googled the problem to see if there was a solution. This is where things started to worry me. There were many a solution but they weren’t proper fixes or they didn’t actually work. I tried to login to the PS Store Account Management website to update my details there to see if that would help – this however did not help at all. I eventually picked up the phone to PlayStation Support, and I got through to a very helpful chap in less than 3 mins (I’m not exaggerating here). We went through my purchase history and any codes that may be fired whilst my purchase was going through – he even double checked my details to ensure they are as they appear on my CC and my bank statements. All was fine. Even the support guy was bemused to why this was happening. Then it got slightly worse. Whilst on the phone, we tried to make the purchase and my PS Store purchases got blocked for 24 hours. If I attempted to purchase anything via the PS Store within these 24 hours, the 24 hours would shift forward until the clock cycle had completed. As Tony the Tiger would say – grrrrrrrreaaat! I was advised to check with my bank to ensure my card hadn’t been blocked etc. Thankfully – all was ok. 24 hours later, I managed to purchase FC HD and I was a happy bunny. I hoped that this was a one-off, unfortunately it wasn’t. The same thing happened again, this time it was on the day Sonic 4 was released on the store – and instead of being blocked for 24 hours, I couldn’t purchase the damn thing for 10 days. Oh the pain I was put through! Have you been affected by this so called ‘bug’ preventing you from purchasing anything from the PS Store?? How long was it before you were able to buy that really important game? Is there a ‘proper’ fix for this problem or do you simply wait out the 24 hours and keep on trying?
