Sony: Let’s Focus On Hardcore Gamers

Tired of seeing your gaming providers turn again and again to casual gamers? For those on PS3, that time is at an end. Sony have confirmed that they will be focusing less on casual projects such as Playstation Move, Buzz and other enterprises and instead on extending a hand to hardcore gamers. Sony wants to return the love we give them, it seems that since we’ve helped them, they want to help us. I for one, always think it’s nice to see a company want to actively and unnecessarily help their community. More after the jump! Sony: Quote: We now want to bring back the focus on hardcore gamers, we realise the hardcore gamers are the ones that are actively involved in the community and are constantly giving feedback not to mention being the most dedicated. Xbox Live subscribers have the privilege of excellent community features. Implemented services such as cross-game chat are invaluable and Sony are trying to strengthen the community. Sony Game Studio games always feature good single player and while I for one, greatly enjoy single player, it’s hard to communicate to friends. Sony knows this, they also know that the same single player gamers enjoy going online and decimating with clan members and friends by your side. Are they going to fill the space that separates both types of gaming? The hardcore community screams for cross game chat and Sony tell us that they are going to give us ‘what we want’. Nothing has been confirmed yet, I hope that cross-game chat will be coming to PS3 at some time in the not-so-distant future. Sony: Quote: the plan for the future is to bring the community back together However, Sony have mentioned that they will be holding tournaments in the future. Tournament features could be a godsend for gamebattles users. Sony Spokesman: Quote: What I would ideally want is 200 people playing Killzone in a tournament. Sony game studios have produced some incredible games and I believe in Sony as a company. Microsoft have served their community well and continue to do so. Now it’s time for Sony to step up to the platform (no pun intended). I’m certain that we can all look forward to whatever Sony has in store for us. Rumor: White PS3 To Hit The UK In October?

Rumors are afloat, especially when Christmas isn’t too far away, SONY are apparently going to be releasing a ‘White’ SKU of the ever popular PS3 console in the UK this year. According to Product Reviews (and their tip offs), there are 2 models hitting the UK this October – 160GB and 320GB. Whatever happened to a 250GB model? With the Christmas rush which tends to start around October and the competition between Microsoft and SONY both trying to shift units, the white unit is quite likely to hit the UK shores. Hopefully there will be more details on whether this rumor is in fact a rumor or truth at GamesCon later this month which takes place in Germany. The Weekly Recap (July 18th-24th)

This Week Thanks go out to Tosh for compiling the news from last week. Been very busy lately, but I should have some time for other stuff now that most of the things that used up my time are now finally slowing down. Anyway, there was quite a bit of news to cover actually. Oddworld seems to be making a return . Tarsier Studios is now First Party . Hip Hop Gamer did an awesome interview with Anton Mikhailov about the Move, and motion gaming in general. Rockstar will soon be targeting cheaters . And, there are a ton of gameplay videos last week, so go and read the Gaming News tab for those. One of the cooler ones is time passage in Red Dead Redemption . Pretty cool stuff and gives you a good idea of progression of time in the game and what changes around you. Community News OK, there was quite a bit of Community news last week. For one, you can earn double points for the rest of the month simply by posting in the forums ! And in case you might have missed it, Oly was at Comic-Con this year and did some live blogging so be sure to check that out, too. Tosh has compiled a list of Twitter accounts of different members and staff. There is also a Twitter widget on the site, which can be seen at the bottom of the side bar on the community pages . Another cool thing you can use is the ability to call a number and leave a voicemail . Given the interest in starting a podcast, this could be a cool feature to use to get some shout outs or what have you aired on the podcast. Hopefully we can manage to get one going, because that would be very cool. Tosh ran a giveaway for the 20,000th comment , and the winner was Oly . Congrats! Beyond that, the Weekly Recap Giveaway is still going on. I will begin reviewing entries this week to make sure entrants have done the qualifying steps. This Week Quite a bit late with this one, for sure. Had some personal stuff going on for a while (health and vehicle related) so I had been pre-occupied with that and haven’t really been able to come on here and post much of anything. All that has finally been taken care of, though, so I’m definitely in better spirits now (that, and the Senate finally passed the much-needed Unemployment Extension). So what’s new for this week? Sakinah let us know that Hello Games broke even on release day with their title Joe Danger , which is a great title, by the way (hopefully this means more awesome games from them in the future). Darrin showed us the numbers for June . The Hulu+ service is available in preview form for PS+ subscribers . James Bond seems to be making a return , and the announcement of the title, Blood Stone , even has a debut trailer . There are a few pieces of other news as well, so be sure to check out the entirety of the recap and see what you may have missed. I’d go a little more in-depth here, but seeing as I have yet another Recap to write after this one, I need to manage my time . Community News From what I can gather, we didn’t really have much news in the Community a couple weeks ago. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t very active, though. We still had a number of posts come in. Tosh did manage to organize the top menu more, though. It makes navigation of some of the site’s pages easier and also better labeled the different link across the top to make a little more sense. There’s a new Group Forums Directory that now allows you to create new group forum topics from that page rather than having to navigate to each individual group separately. Keep in mind, not all groups have forums, so you may not be able to post a topic in a few of them. You can also check out a new Help Video on how to Favorite all the different things (news posts, topics, etc) on the site. If you aren’t a member, the contests should be enough to make you want to register! Not only that, if you’re logged in, you can join in on the Live Chat (which is always busy, save for late nights) and there are always secret contests being held there. Crytek open to making a PS3 exclusive

At E3, Crytek announced an Xbox 360 exclusive called Codename: Kingdoms . While the Microsoft deal may keep them busy for a while, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli says that they’re very open to making an exclusive for the PS3 too. “We are an independent studio so we can (a) Do whatever we want and (b) [Have the freedom] to announce something else next week if we want to,” said Yerli. “Sony is a partner that we would definitely love to work with. A [PS3 exclusive] is something we considered before – we talked about it a lot, but for reasons of portfolio or timing in the past it didn’t work out. But that doesn’t mean in the future it wouldn’t work.” Aside from Codename: Kingdoms , Crytek is now working on Crysis 2 which is also coming out on PS3. Via [ CVG ]

Sony Let Microsoft Have Kinect

Anton Mikhailov explains why they let Microsoft have the Kinect technology. Skip to the 9:00 mark if you want to see that. They talk about how Kinect has trouble tracking people with varying heights, for example 5′ 7″ vs 6′ 4″. How they need to be far away from the camera for it to see your whole body. With the PlayStation Move just the “orb” need to be seen by the camera. Near the end of the video Anton talks about the PlayStation Move and the XMB. He basically said it’s not the best option to control the XMB with motion. It would be tiresome going threw hundreds of songs and would have to be reworked if they where to control the XMB via Move. The Six Weirdest PlayStation Ads

No matter what Xbox fanboys say, Microsoft can never top Sony in the ad department. Most of the ads for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 were rather creepy or revolting. And this post will highlight (or lowlight) the best (or worst) of them. No. 6: “You’re saying that the PlayStation is Jesus? I’m so confused.” The Vatican did object to this ad, which only circulated in Italy, where 90% of the population is Catholic, and most of the people who saw it were deeply offended. But, in all honesty, this looks like the MySpace profile pic of a creepy priest. Too be honest, I have no idea who Sony is trying to appeal to. The caption, PlayStation: 10 anni di passione, translates to ‘1o years of passion’. A seemingly innocent caption. But, when coupled with the crown of thorns, and the film ‘ The Passion of the Christ ‘, which was published by uber-Catholic and uber-prejudiced Mel Gibson, it’s revealed that the ad is saying that the PlayStation is Jesus. And that’s not cool, especially in Italy. It’s also, incredibly creepy. No. 5: A Scottish teenage alien-human talks about mental wealth Since when do weird alien-human hybrid teenagers talk with Scottish accents? I know one thing, and it’s that this ad does not help with mental wealth at all. The ad was directed by Chris Cunningham, a director who studied under Stanley Kubrick. There’s something about this ad that’s incredibly disquieting. Like, you’ve just seen how insane the mind can be, and now you’re on your way to that level of insanity. Or something. It’s creepy, let’s just leave it at that. No. 4: Thumb-Penis This might be one of the single most ill-advised gaming ads not involving John Romero and the word ‘bitch’ . I’m not going to show the ad on principle. NSWF (not safe for work) You can search for it on Google if you really want to know. No. 3: Weird Sex Possibly NSFW . Nothing says ‘Hey, let’s buy a PlayStation 2′ like a hot woman having a five-way with hairy, fleshy shapes. No. 2: Stalker NSWF . This looks like something out of a movie where the main character gets raped by this dude. ‘How is this supposed to convince me to buy a PlayStation 2?’ ‘Will a PS2 turn me into a stalker?!’ ‘Will this guy come and get me if I don’t buy a PS2!?!’ These are all questions that come to mind when I look at this ad. No. 1: Creepy Baby Sweet mother of God, that’s horrifying. I remember when these ‘White Room’ PS3 ads came out. They didn’t make me want a PS3. If anything, they made me want to hate the PS3. I even thought that Microsoft had come out with these insane ads in order to keep people from switching over from an Xbox 360 to a PS3. This is by far one of the creepiest commercials ever to appear on prime time television (I think it debuted during the World Series in October). And the reason why this commercial is so creepy is because of the baby’s laugh. I still have nightmares about that.

My Motion Tech Is Better Than Yours!

Microsoft officially revealed the pricing and details of their motion tech, Kinect, yesterday and compared it to Sony’s Move and the Nintendo Wii. According to the Microsoft when compared to the Wii and Move, Kinect is the overall winner when it comes to affordability. ( Note how Microsoft used the original PS3 “PHAT” model for their price comparison.) Well, Sony wasn’t going to take this lying down and have released their own comparison chart which shows that Move only does everything. What do you think? Sony: Microsoft or Nintendo Will Kick Off Eighth Console Generation

Talk is starting up again about Sony’s next home console, but according to Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, they likely won’t be the ones to kick the next generation off. Speaking to Develop, Yoshida said he believes either Nintendo or Microsoft will release their next generation consoles first. “Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. “Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move. “Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.” “Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.” I can honestly say i agree with Yoshida, I think the PS3 is going to have many more strong years. Sony working on ‘future platform related activities’

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that Sony is indeed already working on some new hardware. “Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public,” Yoshida told Develop. “Some future platform related activities.” Yoshida didn’t specify if it’s a new portable or a new home console. What Yoshida did explain however was that Sony’s next line of PlayStations will be more developer-friendly, thanks to input from SCE president Kaz Hirai. “When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, ‘get Worldwide Studios in on hardware development’,” Yoshida said. “So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning [of the concept of the new hardware], and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers].” This closer collaboration between the hardware and software development teams is also reportedly what helped spawn the PlayStation Move motion controller. “Move is one of those new ways of developing platforms,” said Yoshida.
