PlayStation Network Free Video Rentals

So, the PlayStation 3 has had Netflix for some time, and only recently was able to get a disc-free version of the service (which, I might add, is lightning fast compared to the disc), and Hulu Plus will officially launch next week. Now word is floating around that the VUDU service may also be heading to the system, and as soon as this December. For those unfamiliar with VUDU, it is an HD Movie and TV streaming service, similar in a way to Netflix, that also allows you to purchase movies as well (and, unlike Netflix, it has a lot of new releases available to stream as well). It’s not subscription-based, though, so you’ll have to ‘rent’ movies like on-demand services from cable/satellite providers. IGN has gotten a hold of some internal documents from VUDU’s parent company, Wal-Mart, that says: PS3 and Vudu Walmart’s own digital download service will be available on the Playstation network Over 20 million existing PS3 customers will have access to this service Of course, making it sound pretty official, IGN contacted both Sony and VUDU, and both declined to comment.

Starting Oct. 16th, and every Saturday through Halloween, PSN is “offering a FREE ‘Midnight’ movie rental from 5pm PST to 3am PST.” All three films will be SD (unfortunately), but what the heck, they’re FREE!! The movies will be the following: Bram Stoker’s Dracula will be available Saturday night from 5pm PST 10/16/2010 and ending 3am PST 10/17/2010. Savage County will be available Saturday night from 5pm PST 10/23/2010 and ending 3am PST 10/24/2010. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) will be available Saturday night from 5pm PST 10/30/2010 and ending 3am PST 10/31/2010. They better not mess this one up! The Hollywood Reporter reports that a director has officially come on board for the  Uncharted movie adaptation. David O. Russell is said to have already signed on the dotted line not only to write but also to pen the screenplay for Nathan’s Hollywood adventure. Included in his portfolio are the movies Three Kings,Flirting With Disaster and I ♥ Huckabees. Not heard of any of them? Yeah, time to check him out on IMDB. Uncharted Movie Finally Gets a Director

Highlights Alright, another late one! Last time I did this was back in June. Sorry again folks. As far as this week’s highlights go, if you’re a PS+ member, I definitely recommend the Blast-Off mini. There are actually quite a few minis that are really good, but looking at the poll numbers thus far, people seem to be overwhelmingly ignoring them. Qore was also released, but I’ve yet to check that out (I do have it downloaded, though). TerRover was released, but has been met with some mediocre reviews due to it’s unforgiving nature (a lot of frustration). There is a demo for that if you want to try it out (as well as 3 other titles). Jimmy’s Vendetta is available for Mafia II, Snoop Dogg has some tracks on Rock Band (wtf?), Witch Hunt DLC for Drag Age: Origins can be purchased, and there’s a decent sized collection of themes and wallpapers available as well. Some Cool Game-Based Movie Trailers

That’s right boys and girls STAR WARS is finally coming to the Blu-ray player in your Galaxy. Over the past 6 years since Blu-ray has entered the market one of the most commonly asked questions has been, “When will Star Wars be released on Blu-ray?” Well the answer was finally given at Star Wars Celebration V taking place in Orlando Florida this week. We will be able to view the saga in all it’s HD glory in the Fall of 2011 most likely around November. Expect a 6 movie box set that will include the Special Edition version of the films and what is sure to be hours and hours of extra features. There is no mention of 3D but I’d expect not as the 3DTV install market will still be quite small at the time of the movies Blu-ray release. Install base is one of the things that has held back the Blu-Ray release for so long. LucasFilm got burned in the past by releasing the films too early in the life cycle of VHS and DVD, later releases preformed very well but the choice was made that it would be better to wait for HDTV and a HD disk format could stand on it’s own feet. Buy the time the Star Wars Saga hits the shelves (once again) it is projected that there will be nearly 100 million Blu-ray devices in homes world wide. Source NYT

PlayStation Store Global Update for the Week of 06/20

Highlights Well, not too much exciting content this week. For the Spring Fever sale in the US, there are a couple bundles you can pick up for PopCap and Midway. The Split/Second demo that was available in the EU store last week is now available in the US store this week, while the EU gets the Rocket Knight demo (a game I never heard of). The ModNation Racers demo for PSP is also available in the states (there has been confirmation that a PS3 one is coming, and I would guess that will be next week, while I’m busy playing Red Dead Redemption ). New episodes of FirstPlay and Qore are also available (FirstPlay is weekly, so that’s no surprise anyway). Minis seem to be releasing a bit more as well, since there’s a handful released every week it seems (but a lot of them are still PSP only). You can also pick up some new Batman: Arkham Asylum DLC (well, they may have been previously exclusive DLC for pre-order or a collector’s edition), as well as the free map packs for the Game of the Year edition, which was released in the states this week. Some BioShock 2 DLC is available as well, including the Rapture Metro (which comes with a couple new trophies as well). Warner Brothers “DVD2Blu” program has uped it’s movie count to 91. For those that don’t know about it, For starting at $4.95 you can trade in you WB DVD movies for the Blu-ray version of the film. The way it works is at the site you select the films you want to upgrade, WB sends you a E-mail with a postage paid shiping label to attach to an envlope, Send “Disk 1″ of the DVD(s) to WB. After WB receives your disks they send out a boxed retail copy of your movies. I’ve found 3 or 4 that I plan to get. Head over to www.dvd2blu.com
