The Weekly Recap (July 17th-23rd)

Recap Despite Comic Con going on in San Diego right now, it’s been a relatively slow week. Pedro put up an editorial about innovation in gaming (and I put up a poll using that as a basis). Speaking of innovation (or lack thereof), a new Zombie game is in the works, this one by Grasshopper Manufacture. We had a few trailers this week. One for Starhawk (which was shown at Comic Con), as well as a Penguin trailer for Batman: Arkham City. We also got a sneak peak at some multiplayer with a new Battlefield 3 trailer as well. We also had a few reviews this week as well. Puzzle Dimension, inFamous 2, and Patapon 3. Be sure to read those and leave comments! With that out of the way, we still have a lot going on, so be sure to read the other tabs for details on giveaways and double points. I definitely suggest taking advantage of the latter to help you with the former. Community News & Game Nights Nothing new this week community wise. We do, however, have double points active through the rest of July! With a good number of giveaways coming up, now is a good time to stock up on points! And, as always, be sure to listen to our BlogCasts! You’ll get plenty of laughs! For our newest one, be sure to listen to episode 10 . The winner of the Alien Zombie Megadeath giveaway has been chosen (as well as the winners of the Red Johnson’s Chronicles giveaway, so congratulations to you guys! We also have our ongoing E3 Swag giveaway , as well as a chance for you to win a blu-ray of the Tekken movie. For major giveaways, we have also made it a lot easier for facebook users to enter them. To see what I mean, be sure to check it out here . 16 Articles // 9 QuickNews Contributor of the Week EdEN – 7 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week EdEN – 3 Entries Most Liked Jay & Pedro (x2) – Official Review: inFamous 2 , Is There a Place Left for Innovation? , & New Arkham City Trailer Shows Penguin – 1 Like Most Comments Pedro – Is There a Place Left for Innovation? – 14 Comments Today was supposed to be our GT5 tournament, but since Pedro couldn’t make it, and likely Baba won’t either (leaving only 3 competitors), I have decided to postpone it until next weekend. One person did have to file for bankruptcy, though. There are still a few things I have to buy myself, but I am a bit low on funds. New Poll Since there wasn’t any valid poll ideas for this week, I decided to come up with one of my own. And I don’t get points for my brilliant ideas . As usual, I like to base them off of something going on this week, so without further ado, this week’s poll is based off of Pedro’s article about innovation. The only thing is, I have a few things listed, and it’s up to you to see what you think is most important for future titles. – What is most important for future titles? Battlefield 3 Leaked Gameplay And a New Trailer

A bunch of videos have hit the internet of Battlefield 3′s Alpha footage, which was from the closed beta. These leaked videos show off the true colors of bf3′s sound engine, which sounds absolutely amazing! We see more melee attacks as well, and I must say, I’m very impressed. DICE got the melee right this time around, it’s very fluid and dynamic. In other news, EA officially released a new trailer. The trailer was dubbed, “Paris Multiplayer Gameplay,” which shows off their 47 wins and 80 nominations at E3. And of course more badass gameplay! Paris Multiplayer Gameplay Leaked Gameplay! Several videos of the Battlefield 3 Alpha have been leaked onto the web ahead of the game’s closed beta in September, with a fresh batch of details about the game’s new sniper rifle and a number of other weapons. The build of the alpha in question looks roughly the same as the one previewed at E3 2011 and elsewhere recently. It still looks badass!!

Netflix Subscription Plan Update

For those of us who use Netflix, may it be the streaming-only service or the DVD/Blu-Ray with streaming service, the latter might be a little disappointed with this news. Netflix has opted to separate both DVD and Blu-Ray plans from the streaming plans. The streaming-only plan will remain $7.99 a month, but since the DVD plan included streaming, it was only $2 more a month for adding DVD onto the plan. Netflix says that didn’t make sense financially, and since DVD rentals are still huge with the service, they wanted it to make better business sense. This is why they divided the plans, and the DVD plan will now be the same price as the streaming plan, at $7.99. 2 discs out at a time will be $11.99. In comparison, the 1 Blu-Ray/DVD plan (that included streaming) was $12.99. At least with the new plan, Blu-Ray renting will be at $9.99, $2 more instead of $3 (and another $1 for each additional disc). Now, here is where the problem starts, though. Since this new plan separates streaming and disc services, subscribers will need to get the bundled service (which doesn’t offer any discounts) if they want both. Those of us currently on the1 DVD/Blu-Ray/Streaming plan pay $12.99 a month, plus tax. With the new subscription update, it will be the $7.99 streaming service, plus another $9.99 for the Blu-Ray/DVD, resulting in a $17.98 bill instead, which, quite frankly, is completely unfair from a consumerist standpoint. Here’s another kicker. The DVD-Only plans only allow up to 2 DVDs/Blu-Rays at a time, so if you currently have the 4 DVD plan, and you want to continue with 4 DVD rentals, you will be forced to get the 4 DVD with streaming, which will now cost you $29.98 a month, $34.98 with Blu-Ray. Same goes with the 3 DVD (albeit at a lower price). For new subscribers, these subscription changes are immediate, but for people who already subscribe to Netflix? We’re not safe, either. If you haven’t changed over before September 1st, you will wind up having to pay AT LEAST the $17.98 ($15.98 if you don’t rent Blu-Rays), depending on the number of discs you have for your current plan. Personally, I might just switch to the Streaming service, as I don’t really watch my disc-based movies as much as I should anyway, and I take forever to get around to them. But still, for those who use both aspects of the service? They’re getting the most mistreatment by this new pricing model. I still love Netflix, though. Source

Lazy Jay’s Pre-E3 Super Recap Extreme 2.0

Recap Being backed up with personal life really makes it hard to get things done on here, but I decided to go ahead and do the past 4 missed recaps all in one post. Hopefully once I get things settled, I’ll be able to do these every Saturday night like I originally intended. I decided to get this done in the wee hours of the morning before more E3 news makes it on here and I’ll be too busy being the Editor in Chief to focus on writing a recap, which will be even more ridiculous if I put it off another week. With that said, May was a pretty busy month with quite a bit of news leading up to E3. First of all, PSN finally came back online, as well as the relaunch of the store. Some of you may have already noticed that the password change server for PSN is still down. I had forgotten what my new PSN password was; I needed to change credit card info and since the password change servers are still down, I couldn’t change it again. Anyway, enough of that. One of the coolest things to announce is that we finally launched our weekly Podcast, called the PS3BlogCast! Each one is about an hour or so long, but because of time constraints, yours truly was only in there on the first episode. Hopefully that can change soon. Click these links for episode 1 , episode 2 , episode 3 , and episode 4 . Now, as far as news items themselves go, I’ll leave that to you to check out, as there is a lot of articles to go through (141, including QuickNews)! Community News In case you haven’t noticed, the chat system currently has a new look, and has also been updated to the latest version. This will actually make it easier for people like me who use the pop-out chat, which didn’t allow you to click a name to send a PM, to be able to do so, as you can now open multiple instances of the chatrooms. Madagasca, one of our main reviewers from across the pond is also interested in knowing what kinds of things you’d like us to change/cover in reviews, so if you have any input on that, be sure to respond here . Over the past 4 weeks, we’ve also gotten some new, hidden site trophies, as well as a referral system for those who want to earn points for inviting friends. Ace also gave us a countdown to E3, and a list of confirmed games to be at the show, so if you want to check that out before the event officially kicks off tomorrow, check it out here . We did have one contest/giveaway over the past month, and that was for a Roxio game capture unit (thanks to Roxio for providing us with a review unit, as well as a unit to give away). Congratulations goes out to jwhyrock for winning that one ! This poll was live for quite some time, and has garnered a lot of votes during that period. Going by the results, we don’t have too many responsible people. In fact, people with 360s who only came on here to troll the site exceeded the number of people who actually took the time to study or to even go outside. The true dominating force is all of those people who spent that PSN downtime to collect trophies. Those who haven’t been doing much gaming weren’t really trailing that far behind, though, but since that exceeded studying and going outside (and discovering life), I could only assume that those people stared at a blank TV screen until PSN resumed service (or have been watching the newest episodes of fine TV programming like River Monsters and Swamp People). And then there’s the folks who didn’t even know PSN had an outage. New Poll With E3 happening this week, the current poll focuses on that and what you want to see announced or what games you hope there is a focus on. Lazy Jay’s Pre-E3 Super Recap Extreme 2.0

The (Bi)Weekly Recap (April 24th-May 7th)

Recap Well, this recap is on-time for last week, but a week late for the week before. Go figure. It has been another busy week for me, and being one of the only editors active this past week (it was mainly just Eddie and I), I tried getting posts approved and interacting with the community (there were a couple bad apple guests that tried to start problems, though). Anyway, what were some highlights this week, besides the flood of outage posts? Well, semi-having-to-do-with-that, we had a few opinion pieces on greed, impatience and the general feelings of how people are reacting to the news. Darrin posted his most anticipated games of the year, which helped stray attention away from the outage at least. EA announced the newest addition to the Need for Speed franchise, which appears to focus more on action and story than ever before. Redbox announced its plans to provide games for locations across the country (a service that has been tested in a few places, including southern California, since August 2009 or so). We saw some more gameplay for Twisted Metal, and I gotta say, that game seems to look better and better, and more fun, the more they show of it. Another game has been announced, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, though, no real trailer for that. We have also had our fair share of reviews over the past couple weeks, including a SOCOM 4 single player review (thanks to the outage), PlayStation Move Heroes, and Mortal Kombat. Speaking of reviews, last week was our first week of keeping the “Official Review” title reserved for staff, so as to better show off how many of our reviews are actually by regular contributors. Community News & Game Nights Not a whole lot of Community news over the past couple weeks, besides the points system update , which includes notifications and an easier way to see how many points you’ve donated to a lottery, etc. I also gave Tosh some other input on a few other things, but for now, until he responds, it’s just an idea. A couple of you might know about it already, but just in case it doesn’t go through, it’s not worth mentioning. Given the fact that many of our staff was away for the past week, and activity fell short as a whole, we currently do not have any contests available to enter. And then there’s also the outage, and if you won a couple codes for games to download, it would be kind of crappy to have to wait until the outage is over with . The Weekly Recap (March 6th-12th)

Recap Yeah, I wound up being late again. It was a pretty hectic week for me, as I was busy editing video and the like for the site, and given slow upload speeds and slow rendering times for the videos, it was a long process (plus I had other things to do as well). Anyway, enough of my complaining. Last week was a relatively quiet week in terms of number of posts, but we did have a bit of news come out of that. First off, PS+ members finally got the save game cloud, which will come in handy for those who might get a YLOD and no way to get their saves back. We also got a look at the main villain of Uncharted 3, a new L.A. Noire gameplay video (as well as a collection of videos and trailers for other games; be sure to check all those out). We have our review for the PSN title, Stacking, up. Although there have been mixed reviews, this one does a good job of telling readers what to expect from the title. One of our members also posted an editorial of his favorite and least favorite games, and that sparked an interesting conversation, so check that out, too. As far as Sony, itself, goes, a few UK studios have had projects shut down to focus more on already-announced exclusive titles to keep their quality up and release in a timely manner. Sony was also affected by the earthquake in Japan, and had some of its plants shut down. If you can help with disaster relief in any way, please do so! PAX East also took place, and Luke managed to attend all 3 days. He got us a bunch of videos and interviews, and will also have an upcoming t-shirt giveaway. I wish something like PAX would happen here in Arizona, though . Community News & Game Nights If I recall correctly, we had this new chat system set up last week, but we didn’t describe new features until earlier this week, but it seems most people have figured it out anyway. Personally, I like the new system, but I wish staff, like myself, could engage in the private chats with anyone online, as opposed to having to be friends in order to use it, but that’s just me. Overall, though, it’s definitely a nicer system than the previous one we had, and makes private conversations much easier, as we no longer have to do that @@name to PM someone in the chat; and it’s more secure. There were a couple contests last week. First off, the winners of the InFamous 2 DLC codes can be found here . We also have the winner of the Cannon Fodder: Paper Wars contest as well. Hope you are enjoying the game! The SOCOM 4 contest for some beta keys started last week , and concluded this morning, so congratulations to the winners! 21 Articles // 16 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Jay – 7 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Beastxjason – 7 Entries Most Liked Jay – PlayStation Plus Getting Cloud Game Saves Starting Tomorrow – 3 Likes Most Comments Jay & Eddie – PlayStation Plus Getting Cloud Game Saves Starting Tomorrow & Uncharted 3 Villain Revealed [Update: Video] – 34 Comments We had held a March 10th Game Night in Killzone 3, in which Ace also posted some video of himself playing as well. As Tosh mentioned in our anniversary post, we are currently working on that, so be patient! As far as some other results go, more giveaways was an obvious choice for a lot of people, better copy editing was another (not sure what you’re asking for there; if you mean editing in general, we’re working on it ). A referral system got a few votes, as did those who said we’re awesome already. I also don’t know where the “Merge with thePlayStationshow.com” came from , but someone wants it to happen. Personally, I think that is very doubtful haha. Anyway, we will take your opinions into consideration and see what we can do to change it up for ya, but in a way that works, of course. New Poll Given the short amount of time needed for this poll, we will be skipping it for this recap, but on this week’s recap (which I hope will be up tomorrow), we will have a new poll for you.

The Weekly Recap (March 6th-12th)

The Weekly Recap (February 27th-March 5th)

Recap It was a relatively slow week. We do have a few reviews you can check out, even one that includes a giveaway for the game that was reviews (Paper Wars). Normally, during the Game Developers Conference, we would get a whole lot of news, but this year was rather uneventful, with maybe the highlights being a couple NGP features, and inFamous 2 getting a mission creator. That’s about it. We’ve got a bunch of game videos to look at, as well as the new MLB 11: The Show ad featuring Kevin Butler. There was also a pretty cool off-screen gameplay video of Battlefield 3. There are also 2 ongoing giveaways, and one is supposed to end tomorrow, so be sure to read the Community News tab for that information. We also have the double points activated on the site as well. Nothing much beyond this, really, as it was a pretty slow week. Community News & Game Nights Not much new beyond setting up a Podcast, which we’re hoping to start sometime this month. Also, currently ongoing until the 14th, we have Double Points in effect, so if you want to stock up on those, be sure to become an active member and take advantage of it while it lasts! Currently, we have two giveaways going on. One is for an InFamous 2 alternate costume and a static theme. To find out how to enter, check here . The other giveaway is for Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder, with details, and a review of the game, here . Apparently, it’s a lot more fun than it looks, and there seems to be a bit more interest in this giveaway than what we’ve seen on similar ones in the past. Might have to check it out when I get the chance. 19 Articles // 12 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Beastxjason – 5 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Beastxjason – 6 Entries Most Liked Eddie – Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder PS3Blog.net Review and Giveaway Contest! – 5 Likes Most Comments Eddie – Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder PS3Blog.net Review and Giveaway Contest! – 30 Comments Currently, no game nights are planned. NGP News Round Up

NGP NGP has been a source of media attention since it has announced with rumors, requests and some sprinkled in info. Developers seem to be in a supportive frenzy unlike which I have seen for any other platform in the past. I’ve seen developers go back and forth over the console that they are developing for but I’ve never seen this number of developers show unanimous support for a single console prior to its launching like this one. It surely gets the brain going. Retailers Preferred Price – From MCVUK , some retailers are speaking up on preferred price. Retailers are asking Sony for a sub £300 price range to be successful. That’s roughly $480 in North America, but as we know there is not a direct currency translation between us and the UK. Currently the PS3 is about £258.37 in the UK. (UK guys feel free to correct me). So they are asking for the NGP to be priced around the same price as the PS3. For reference, the 3DS is listed at £229.99. Developer Smiling – From Scrawlfx.com Creative Directed Ru Weerasuriya from Ready at Dawn had a lot to say about the NGP at the DICE summit. Ready at Dawn is known for the PSP versions of God of War. ” I have a smile on my face whenever we talk about the NGP because I think overall that console has the potential to really define what portable gaming is. You know, we did that also with the PS3 and all that, but the NGP — not only with the touch screen capability, but the screen, and just the capacity of actually making a game that’s probably better than PS3 games that you can make right now — for me, it’s like the thing. For portable gaming I don’t think there’s anything else in the future.” Nippon Ichi – according to Destructoid , Vice President of Nippon Ichi , Johanna Hirota, has confirmed that they are working on a game for the NGP that will be ready “This Year”, which brings light to a 2011 release at least in Japan. Nippon Ichi is best known for the Disgaea series so maybe that’s what we will see on the NGP? Famitsu Response – Andriasang , has listed Famitsu readers responses as to what they want with the NGP. DO YOU WANT AN NGP? Even though there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding NGP, including details on price and launch titles, Famitsu’s readers appear to be largely excited about the system. Asked if they want the NGP, 76.2% said yes. Only 7.9% said no, with the remaining 15.9% saying they’re still not sure. HOW MUCH WILL NGP COST? How much interest the NGP ends up drawing will likely have a lot to do with price. The second item in the survey was a multiple choice question about expected price. 42.5% selected ¥30,000 or below as the system’s expected price point. The second most popular response was ¥35,000 and below at 18.7%, followed by ¥25,000 and below at 17%. 1.5% expect the system to cost below ¥15,000, which would be lower than the PSP’s current ¥16,800. 3.7% expect it to cost over ¥50,000. Famitsu didn’t get a reason from those who selected ¥15,000. However, a 44-year-old man who selected ¥50,000 said that he expects the system to cost around the level of current Smartphones. WHAT NGP COLORS DO YOU WANT? Sony showed white and black NGP models at the PlayStation Meeting unveiling. White is actually the most wanted color amongst survey takers, getting 224 votes. Blue came in second with 183 votes, followed by Red, Silver and Green. Black didn’t make the top five. WHAT ARE NGP’S MOST APPEALING FEATURES? NGP is packed with features, from its massive screen to its various input devices to built in 3G support and software features like Near and LiveArea. Famitsu asked readers which feature is most notable. The top response with 680 votes was the system’s ability to deliver console-level graphics. Coming in at a close second with 622 votes was the system’s dual analogue stick setup. Screen resolution of four times that of the PSP came in at third with 607 votes. WHAT GENRE DO YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH TOUCH CONTROLS? One of the NGP’s more unique features is its inclusion of dual touch panels, one on the screen and one behind the unit. At the press conference, Sony demonstrated dual touch controls for Uncharted and Little Deviants. Famitsu asked readers to name the genre the’d most like to see use dual touch controls. Action was the most popular response by far, beating out puzzle, simulation, FPS and adventure in that order. Among the responses, one 20-year-old college student suggested that the rear touch pad could be appropriate when you have to control something separate from your character. Some responders felt that the dual touch panels could lead to revolutionary controls. WHAT GAME SERIES DO YOU WANT TO PLAY ON NGP? The result for this question shouldn’t come as a surprise. Monster Hunter got 282 votes, almost as much as the other four in the top five combined. Metal Gear Solid was second, followed by Final Fantasy, Tales and Kingdom Hearts. One responder said that because the system has a right analogue stick similar to the Dual Shock, he wants to play Monster Hunter. Somewhat related to this, Famitsu’s readers selected Capcom as their most wanted NGP third party developer. Konami came next, followed by Square Enix, Sega and Namco Bandai.

Crysis 2 Leaked!

Seems like someone at EA or Crytek got a little ahead of themselves and released a build of the game onto the interwebs. The game is due for release on March 22nd but according to EA, “Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2″. They both seemed to be pretty disappointed by the news and encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting for the final product. I am not sure how much this is really going to hurt the sales. It’s been said by the ones that have downloaded the game that it’s buggy and broken even though it’s the full game. Check out the game in multiplayer sweetness after the jump and tell me you would still prefer some broken piece of crap.
