The Weekly Recap (July 4th-10th) – 1 Year Anniversary

Celebrating a Full Year of the Weekly Recap! And don’t forget to check out the contest This Week So, this is a pretty exciting recap. Been doing it for a full year now and still going. With that, we’re also launching a new contest , so be sure to check out the Community News tab for contest details. Big prizes, too! Now, for last week’s highlights. Oly informed us that Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is NOT a sequel . You can also read his Day 1 experience at E3 . Madagasca wants to know what games you want brought back from the dead. Demerson let us know that a Ratchet and Clank collection could be made , but that the developers themselves won’t be working on it. Both Ace and SL33PY informed us of Sony working on new hardware (I knew I read that somewhere on here, so sorry for allowing a double posting of a news story ). Sakinah also told about YouTube ’s plans on getting 3D videos streamed to the PS3 , which is a pretty cool idea. Red Dead Redemption will be receiving more DLC , which include a lot of new single player stuff as well. Dragon Age 2 will be hitting PS3 . And Oly showed us a teaser for a Kratos figure made by Sideshow Collectibles , which will have a formal debut at Comic Con . And finally, read Henning ’s impressions of the long-awaited Canada video store . You can also check out reviews for Tales of Monkey Island and a triple header of minis reviews. Now, there’s still more to check out, and I advise you to go through it all, especially the new stuff, and the contest. Check out the “ A Look Back… ” tab, too, for a brief history of the recap. Here’s to another year! A Look Back… So yeah, I’ve been doing this for a whole year now. Where the heck did the time go? Anyway, in this tab, we’re going to take a trip down memory lane. Each of the pictures links to the original article So back in the middle of July of last year, and with the increase of articles being posted and the like, I had decided to start doing a weekly recap. Without prior discussion with anyone else on the site, I went ahead and created it. Tosh, who had recently picked up ownership of the site, liked the idea, and since then, the Weekly Recap has come up every week (this is actually recap #53, which means this one is the start of a new year for it). Back then, it was very simple. It only listed articles and who submitted the most comments and the like, and since then, it had actually grown and evolved quite a bit. A couple weeks later, and after some discussion with Tosh, we changed the main banner to better reflect the new theme Tosh had implemented. It used the font used in the top banner, but had a newly (badly) made background image. It looked a lot cleaner and more professional than the recaps before, at least. The following Recap, I added some smaller banners, introducing new pieces and the like, giving more content to read. From here on, the more familiar Recaps started, with new banners to mimic the main banner at the top of the recap, dividing it more effectively. On the November 8th edition, in an effort to get more people involved with the community, and provide links to the Weekly posts, which were not counted, I provided the buttons that are found at the side bar. This was another feature I had used from that moment (the next week, I had added the New Game Releases button, which was another feature I had started). Now, on the December 13th edition, the recaps gained a bit of color to match the banner at the top. Features and content didn’t change from the previous versions, but it does look a lot better than the grayscale banners. These banners are still in use today. This is the one that will be most familiar to you. Thanks to a new feature at the time (the tabs), the Recap cleaned up a LOT, and navigation through it was made much, much easier. Until the February 21st edition , Poll results were text-based, but since then, I have used Google gadgets to create interactive graphs. Quite a few changes in a year. In case you’re wondering, I have added some new stuff to this one as well, in the Community News and Gaming News tabs, so be sure to check those out. As far as this tab goes? It’s a one of, in celebration of keeping this going for a year! Community News Not too many new features lately, but now, above every comment made by members (who are logged into the site), their point data will also be displayed . Given that points are awarded to people who find some of the new features, its a good idea to become a member, and participate in the Live Chat, where these mini-contests take place. The only other new feature would have to be the updated Weekly Recap, with these new sub-banners on this, and the Gaming News tab. To continue with the winning entries for the Red Dead Redemption Chronicle contest, you can now read EdEN’s entry , titled Life’s Tough , and Part one and Part two of David Goransson ’s chronicle, Dirty Pants . As far as part two goes, EdEN won the contest, which entails correctly guessing what would happen next. Though no one guessed correctly, EdEN was randomly selected as the winner. Now for a new contest. This one requires two parts. Part one, you must create an image superimposed with the avatars of the staff members (you can use either just one, or a combination of avatars). You don’t have to be a professional or anything, but it must, at least, show some effort. If all you have is Paint, that’s perfectly fine. Just be creative! Here’s an example , made by Oly and Demerson (well, Demerson did the caption). Part two? You will, then, have to submit points to the Lottery . Each lottery entry will be 250 points, with a maximum of 1000 points (4 lottery entries; please donate each 250 points separately). This way, Oly won’t necessarily win . You only need one image, and not one for each lottery entry. If you so choose, you can go ahead and create multiple images, but it’s not going to better your chances of winning. This is also one of the bigger contests, too, thanks to Tosh . Check out the prizes: 1st Prize : $50 PSN Giftcard (you can get PlayStation Plus with this if you haven’t already gotten it) 2nd Prize : PS3Blog.net T-Shirt 3rd Prize : Points refunded, plus another 500 Now, as for member avatars. here’s the list: Tosh – Darrin – Eddie – Trev – Jay – Sakinah – Henning – Gary Need a larger version of an image? No problem! Simply PM Tosh and he’ll get them for you. Good luck to the entrants! Just leave a reply with a link to your image and then proceed with submitting the points. Contest ends July 31st to maximize entries, without having to go into the next month . 27 Articles // 1 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Oly1Kenobi – 5 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Oly1Kenobi – 1 Entries Most Liked Oly1Kenobi – My E3 Experience Day 1 (Part 1) – 10 Likes Most Comments Jay – minis Review Roundup: 5-in-1 Arcade Hits, Fieldrunners, and Age of Zombies – 13 Comments Gaming News Stephen Fry recording for LBP2 Trev – July 6th NBA 2K11 Cover is tongue out Marc Macayan – July 7th Dead Rising 2 Cover Revealed Trev – July 8th Comic-Con 2010 Thursday Program Schedule to Include SW:ForceUnleashed 2 and AC:Brotherhood Oly1Kenobi – July 8th Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is not Assassin’s Creed 3 Oly1Kenobi – July 8th My E3 Experience Day 1 (Part 1) Oly1Kenobi – July 7th Leave it to Sony to Snatch Defeat Out of the Jaws of Victory Sakinah – July 8th PS3/Xbox 360 – Which Game Do You Want To See Brought Back From The Retro Afterlife? Sinlock left for his vacation a day early, and I don’t know if anyone joined Demerson either. Its just been one of those weeks I suppose. If you missed the previous week’s recap , Sinlock and I had a pretty successful game night. It was a lot of fun, but a couple members had some connection issues. Other than that, there isn’t one currently planned, but you never know, so keep your eyes peeled! Poll Results The results for the previous poll can be viewed on the last recap. As for the current poll? We’re asking you “Will you be purchasing the Move?”, so if you haven’t yet voted, be sure to do so! Thank You Thank you all for a great year. I’m glad to have been getting these up every week (albeit, a little late a few times). Hopefully you like the new changes, as everything news-related should now be easily categorized so you guys can access news that interests you much easier. Also, beyond the banners shown, I do have a couple more that weren’t used, mainly because we didn’t have any news articles that needed them. Again, thanks for reading the recaps, and good luck to all the contest winners!

Special Red Dead Redemption Sale Crashes GameStop

Today at 12:00pm est GameStop kicked off their powerhour sale. During the sales event GameSpot began offering one of the biggest games of 2010, Red Dead Redemption, for more than half off. The PS3 version of RDR was discounted to the attractive price of just $23.99. Once word spread about the powerhour sale, GameStop’s website was subjected to heavy traffic that caused the site to crashed  with reports of errors such as “Server too Busy” or loads a blank screen. GameStop’s sister site, EBGames, which also featured the sale, received similar server problems as well. The sale ended at 1:00pm est and both sites are up an running smoothly again. A quick check of both websites reveal that the sale was a success as Red Dead Redemption is sold out.  Hope you got your copy. Source

PS3Blog.net is attending E3 2010!

Our very own Oly1Kenobi is going to attend E3 2010 on behalf of PS3Blog.net! He’ll be attending June 15th and 17th. This is a first for PS3Blog.net so I’m pretty excited. Are you going to attend E3 next week? If so want to help cover it? We’ll probably need help next week just getting all the news flooding out of E3 posting on the website too.

The Weekly Recap (May 30th – June 5th)

This Week Do you guys realize I’ve been doing these recaps for almost a year now? It doesn’t seem like I’ve been doing them that long at all! The design has been through a LOT of changes since then, too. Anyway, there’s still a month left before the full year of Weekly Recaps. I’ll probably do a retro-look back at when I first started them in a ‘ Special Edition ‘ tab or something. As far as this week goes, it actually wasn’t too active at all (we only had 13 submissions and 4 QuickNews ?), but I felt that we had more news come in than what was posted. Probably because I stepped it up on my reporting last week and it felt pretty busy. With E3 getting closer and closer, the build up of news last week really started to come about in the later half, as announcements and leaks of games we probably would not have heard of until E3 began to surface (I’m looking at you, InFamous 2 and MotorStorm 3 ). This week has already started to look ridiculously busy, and I would imagine we should see a lot more pre-E3 news this week, as the event kicks off next week (so we’ll be even busier then). It makes you wonder what Sony will be showing off this year if we’ve already seen so much? I’m going to try to get the New Games post up today as well, and I still have a few more articles I want to get written up, so bear with me. The main highlights outside of those announcements, though, are that Joe Danger will be available tomorrow , and I plan on reviewing the title. The PS3 will now start including an HDMI cable (at least the 250GB anyway), Killzone 3 has an official teaser (which we will most likely see a LOT more of at E3), and a few other bits you can read about in the ‘ Gaming News ‘ tab. Also, be sure to read about that ‘ Deep Screen ‘, which promises 3D without the use of glasses or special tech. And this week, we have another Official Review. This time by Trev , where he reviews 2010 FIFA World Cup , so be sure to read that as well! Community News The Community has been rather quiet, BUT Tosh did announce the winner of the IntensaFire Giveaway , and the winner was JohnGalt . Congratulations! Tosh also has another contest going on over at SlySpyder . You could win a $100 Amazon gift card! For those not in the know, SlySpyder is a review site that allows it’s user to review everything and anything, so if you have even like a cheap trinket you found at a dollar store, you could review it . I might review stuff over there, too, but it’s hard to find the time for everything. They usually announce they’re going to play in the Community Chat box, but that’s for members only, so if you haven’t already done so, I suggest registering and log in, so you can view the chat and talk with us. It’s usually pretty active and occasionally even has news that we haven’t posted (usually related to other devices and not the PS3, though). Poll Results These results are as of this posting. The final results may vary as the current poll is still open. Thank You Thank you for reading this week’s recap. I appreciate your support. THe only thing I can say now, though, is that with E3 coming, I’d like to see more of you guys register and even take up on the offer to become writers yourself, so we have a constant stream of news coming in. Tosh and I will approve stories that make the cut. I’ll usually fix mistakes and the like, if I come across any, to make them up to our standards and get them up for you, though. If you prove to be a good writer with plenty of useful information (as in good news, and constantly submitting news articles, but overall, it’s still quality over quantity), you could potentially be able to have access to post without needing approval and maybe even become an official writer one day! That’s how I did it. It’s up to you if you want to pursue that route, though.

The Weekly Recap (May 23rd-29th)

Highlights Bad week for me the past week. Lots of sleep due to being doped up on meds . I never did get to the weeklies last week due to illness. I did manage to get 100% on Red Dead Redemption, though . Hopefully I’m at the tail end of this sickness right now, though. Anyway, what about this week’s highlights? We’ve had a total of 19 main articles this week. The 2101 PS3s are hitting store shelves . There is also talk that the premium PSN service will be called PSN+ . Kung Fu Live! has finally made an appearance , and looks pretty fun. Thrustmaster finally came out with a cockpit , and will hopefully inspire others to make them as well (I’m looking at you Logitech). And Insomniac has finally made official that they are creating a multiplatform IP . Darrin also has some points for Red Dead Redemption , and I followed that up with an Official Review . Other than that, not much else in terms of news, but be sure to check on the back posts anyway! Community News Nothing going on in the Community this week. It was definitely a slow week for a lot of us. It’s still nice to see commentating on articles, of course. Remember, if you want to submit news to us, you can by becoming a writer! There’s links all over the place, including the ‘Highlights’ tab of this post. Poll Results No poll results until the end of this week! The current poll shows three franchises with a LOT of support for a movie based on the games, but you’ll just have to vote yourself to see the current standings . Thank You Well, that’s it for me for now. I’ll try to get the Weeklies up this week. Hopefully I won’t have to deal with this nasty feeling much longer . E3 is fast approaching and tomorrow is the first day of June. Thanks for reading all!

The Weekly Recap (May 23rd-29th)

The Weekly Recap (May 16th-22nd)

This Week What a week. I haven’t really posted anything this week, due to the release of Red Dead Redemption (the review is still being worked on, but will definitely be available this week once I get some more online time with it). And then on Friday, I went to a concert, and some other stuff happened here and there, and that’s why I’m posting it now (earlier today we had a slight scare, though, as my uncle almost went into a diabetic coma, but he snapped out of it and looked around as the paramedics were taking him out of the house and asked them “what the hell are you doing here?” ). Anyway, there were quite a few interesting stories this week. Killzone 3 happened to be announced via the newest edition of Game Pro (you’d think they would have kept that under wraps until E3, but given the fact that we know about it now, it will, undoubtedly, make it’s public showing at the event). A much better trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops also made it online. The MUBI service is also hitting the PS3 (most likely just in Europe, though). And also, Kevin Butler and Jack Tretton face off against each other in ModNation Racers in the newest Artist Spotlight. As far as rumors go, I think that this might be a precursor to maybe both hosting Sony’s press conference next month. Speaking of rumors, some still think the PSN premium service will be announced next month as well. There are also even more PSP2 rumors. Going back to Red Dead Redemption, there have been numerous glitches after it’s launch, but Rockstar has since patched the title . You can also read Darrin’s quick comparison of that and GTAIV here . And finally, you can read Trev’s review of ModNation Racers here . Community News This week, the giveaway for the free gift cards , etc. ended last night, and Tosh had posted the winners, and are as follows: 1st Prize – kennygk 2nd Prize – cardoso 3rd Prize – Macdory Congratulations to you guys! And just a heads up, there are also a few new features on the site as well. You can now easily embed videos in the ‘Community’ part of the site . If the site is compatible, all you have to do is paste the URL and it will automatically embed the video for you (unless the author has embedding disabled on the video). Also, you can now easily access your points log , and view other peoples, too! I mostly do the gang hideouts, but if you want to do one of the other games, feel free, as I’ll likely join in. I don’t know where my headset is, though. Poll Results There’s still no poll up for this week yet, but Tosh should have the official results posted today, as well as the new poll . Thank You Well, that’s it for this week! With E3 getting closer and closer, we should definitely be seeing an increase in submissions over the next few weeks (well, hopefully, at least). Thanks for reading! Also, the concert I went to on Friday was Styx, Foreigner and Kansas, and it was one hell of a show. If you don’t like that kind of music, that’s too bad .

The Weekly Recap (April 11th-17th)

This Week Kind of a drop off this week! We had a total of 18 main articles, but QuickNews really picked it up this week (7 of those were actually by me), so I’d check those out as well. Biggest news this week would probably have to go to West and Zampella starting Respawn Studios with EA, as well as Demon Souls officially being announced for EU territories. LBP2 has also been semi-confirmed by a composer on Twitter (probably a violation of the Nondisclosure Agreement). Other bits and pieces? Darrin has the sales data up, and the PS3 is sitting at third place, but second in home consoles, which is good to see (as is the 51% increase in sales year-over-year). I have an opinion piece up about racing games and how the sound design is rather weak (Tosh seems to agree with me 100%). And if you like to read reviews, I have part one of my Sam and Max review up for the Devil’s Playhouse (the first part being episode 1: the Penal Zone). Other than that, there’s a survey that was taken concerning failed consoles with a 500,000 person sample (which is a lot better than most). Another article describing how Sony saved Nintendo in court, and how the US PlayStation Store update might be moving to Tuesday (which, I, myself definitely wouldn’t mind). There’s a few more to check out, though, so be sure to go through the tabs for quick access to news you may have missed this week! Community News Alright, earlier last week, Tosh has officially announced the winners of the PAX swag giveaway. You can check the list here . Congrats to you guys! There might be some stickers left, but I’m not sure. You can also share posts now with your Google Buzz account . Other than that, not much new in the community, but there is a new poll up if you haven’t noticed yet. And one last thing, I have noticed that Tosh has changed the “Community” tab to “Forum”, so just getting that out there.
