Event Recap: Uncharted 3 AMC Theaters Los Angeles

Oly, Kane, and I were lucky enough to get hooked up with Premium Passes and attend the biggest Uncharted 3 AMC theaters event in L.A. This L.A. show had most of the cast in attendance. The 4 hour event started with registration, where they verified your identity, gave you a badge, and a card that contained a validation code for a free copy of the game. The UC3 game will be shipped to us one week before release! You had to register your address onsite using the card. Soon after registering, we started to mingle around with the talent that was there. We got a couple of pictures and posters signed, by most of the crew. From right to left, Nolan North, Emily Rose, Amy Hennig, Gordon Hunt, Robin Atkin Downes,Claudia Black, T.J. Ramini, Greg Edmonson. The Naughty Dog crew who were presented by an over zealous announcer, were on hand showing single player gameplay footage, and a bunch of trailer re-runs re-formatted in 3D. There was also a point where Nolan North came up to pitch his book coming out soon on Amazon. After a question and answer period with the talent, a tournament commenced consisting of 5 person teams, each randomly selected. So if you brought your clan with you, you were basically screwed because they built the team up with random strangers. I got stuck with team “Drake”, which was the first team to be eliminated, because honestly, my team was a “Noob”. I ended the game 9/4, and defeated, by Oly’s team. Kane112′s team also lost their first match. There were a total of 16 teams, playing with 5 minute rounds, or first to 30 kills, rules. Oly got all the way to 3rd place with his team “Sully”, where he got his only kill, yet a game winning kill, by dropping a grenade upon his death. So the rest of the night we were treated with free food from the concession stand with VIP meal cards. There was also a drawing for different prizes between each tournament match. Overall I give the event a 5 out of 5 because of the overall cleanliness, friendliness, and organization. There was no official meet and greet with the talent but it was so good to see them interact with fans on a personal level. No words can describe how talented and amazing this group of people are! A big thank you and appreciation to Sony, Naughty Dog, AMC theaters, and the staff at the event, for giving us a memorable experience!

Why an Uncharted 3 Online Pass is a bad idea

Uncharted Online Online passes are becoming so common that probably in time, there’ll be news for games that don’t have it. Sony is backing and will actively be using online passes for its games from now on. Naughty Dog has also tried justifying the move, mainly stating how servers cost money , never mind the fact that uncharted 3 online will rely on Peer2Peer networking , which is already a very effective way of reducing server costs. Now, what may happen when a mainly single player game such as Uncharted 3, employs an online pass? Since a LOT of people will be buying Uncharted 3 for its single player portion (Please, do correct me if I’m wrong in my assumption), the obvious division between online play and single player might lead to a few things: It will form a barrier for people who might give the online portion a try. This will translate to less people trying out the online, potentially reducing people who might otherwise be hooked. Second hand buyers not willing to pay up will lead to less people playing online The lobbies will become deserted sooner as supply of gamers to play will be lower Second hand buyers willing to pay up will less likely to pay for a deserted online portion. Late potential first hand buyers of the game or people who are only interested will be less likely to buy it new, as they would be thinking they are already paying for the online, which will be deserted. The smaller the number of people that play, even lesser will want to pay up, thus creating a vicious circle in the long run. In the end, Naughty Dog and Sony will get what they want, this will reduce server costs indeed, but not by extra flow of money from online passes, but by having an overall deserted online especially in the long run, and it will hurt people who are actually willing to engage in Uncharted 3 online. The middle-ground? Maybe a level / point cap for people without the online passes, but without any time restriction. Such an approach may balance the supply of new gamers to keep the online alive, and may even result in more online pass sales, if there has to be a pass for it at all. At least with Uncharted 2 they realized that the online portion should NOT count for the Platinum trophy requirements, a trend that has made it to Uncharted 3 as well… for the most part. There are TWO online trophies in Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 pretty much copies the whole trophy list of the last game which means that those buying used won’t be able to get a platinum trophy UNLESS they pony up the $10 for the online pass. Maybe Gamestop will do something good for UC3 used buyers and include a code for the Online Pass on the purchase ticket which they’re already going to do for Arkham City buyers that go for the “not new” edition (which makes sense since Gamestop will probably buy the used Arkham City for $40 and sell it for $55 AND they’re sure to get the codes for the online pass at a huuuuuge discount as well which STILL leaves a considerable margin for profit. After reading all this, what do you think of the whole online pass situation?

PS3Blog.net Game Night Recap Sept. 12, 2011

Just wanted to get a little feedback. Do you like having a poll each time we have a game night and the top 2 games that the main host has will get played in the night? How about other game hosts setting up their own games? By the way being a game host is pretty simple. Just invite people to your party and play. It’s best to hang out in the dedicated “PS3Blog.net Game Night” text chat on the XMB of the PS3. Makes it much easier than trying to send messages back and forth! Cheeto decided to become a game host a couple hours before I started mine. But I updated the post with that about a hour or so before so didn’t give people much notice but was worth a shot. I hung out in the PS3Blog.net PlayStation Home Clubhouse about 10-15 minutes early. Foobear408 showed up in his golden money suit which drips money. Pretty cool I must say. Then Kane112 show up and we showed off our brand new Mechjet powers. Foobear just had to try out the golden throne, which matched his golden suit perfectly. Foobear408, Uncydeka1 and myself played Killzone 3 for about 2 hours. Then we switched to Metal Gear Online for a hour or so. Kane112 & Uncydeka1 joined me for that. Kane112 did pretty well playing as Snake in the sneaking mission. Ceidz joined in on the text chat and mentioned he just got Uncharted 2 and was playing single player and loved it. He told us later he tried multiplayer and he wasn’t very good at it. So everyone gets 100 points for showing up to the game night. Uncydeka1 gets another 50 for being a diverse gamer.

Back to the Future Episode 5 Review

After such a long journey that has taken us from here to there and everywhere in between … how will it all end? Doc went missing and was stuck in the past where he “allegedly” burned down a speakeasy, we changed things just a bit and all of a sudden the Tannen Family owns Hill Valley in the present, changed the present AGAIN by messing with the past and making it more future than present and even tried to cure a severe case of puppy love between a poodle and a vicious pitbull. Did it all work? The Hill Valley Science and Technology Exposition is the main setting available for this episode (not just any Expo…this IS the Expo of the Future!) and you’ll spend about 80% of your time going from stand to stand, marveling at all the technological wonders mere inches away from you. After all we’ve been though in this series the final episode feels a bit more streamline (which is good) and you won’t run into a real “scratch your head” problem until you’re in the second half of it and that is only if you’re going for a trophy that requires you to be very specific about the order in which you do things. Edna Strickland starts things off by accusing Marty of being an agitator, a spy, a communist and so on after she had a very interesting conversation with Mr. Carl Sagan (Future Doc this time around and not our Doc Doc as was the case back in Episode 1) the night before the Expo was set to begin. Wonder what they could have talked about and how we can find out about it so we can fix any problems they might create? You thought Edna was a crazy girl? Wait until you play THIS Episode! She’s baaaaaaaaaad news, all kinds of bonkers and a psycho. Some people can eventually change and grow up after a troubling experience but Edna just puts more gasoline into the fire and watches as the flames reach the sky! It’s no wonder how she ended up alone in the original timeline since just 5 minutes can show you how high maintenance she is and how many screws are missing from that loosely bolted in head of hers. Your main objective during the last episode is making sure that Young Emmet gets a chance to participate in the Hill Valley Science and Technology Exposition even if Edna and Future Doc are trying to end his scientific career before it gets a chance to get of the ground… literally. Emmet goes missing just as the Expo gets started and we all know that if he doesn’t get a chance to participate as a young inventor then he’ll never grow up to be an adult inventor. No inventor means no Doc. No Doc means no DeLorean time machine. No DeLorean time machine means no time travel. No time travel means… it’s time for Marty to start disappearing and cease to exist! There are several clever puzzles to solve this time around and I think that the trophies make more sense by the time we’ve hit episode 5 than they did all the way back on episode 1. Maybe it has more to do with being used to the UI and the controls than it has to do with the way the finale is presented to us? Too many variables! Michael J. Fox is part of the game this time around and provides the voice for some of the cast. You’ll know who when you run into them and if you’re a fan of the movies (which you should be) it will definitely bring a smile to your face. It’s always nice to see the original cast be part of the game based on the movie based on awesome source material.. especially when that game is actually fun and not a quick cash-in developed in 3 months with a colorful case cover! Back to the Future: The Game has been a great experience for the last couple of months that gives us several “what if” scenarios as to what could have happened had a fourth movie been developed. Episode 5 allows the series to go out with a bang and leaves the door open for a Season 2 if you guys go out and buy a season pass RIGHT NOW. Your $19.99 purchase will deliver to you 12-20 hours of fun and nostalgia all wrapped up in a digital bow that sparkles when you smile. Now let’s start preparing for Jurassic Park and Walking Dead… Review Pros Cons Nice surprise at the end for fans of the movies so stay until the credits start! Good closure to the series It’s over! Rating 91% Published by Telltale Games Developed by Telltale Games Cost – $19.99 (Full season pass) Available on PSN Want to get this game?
