Back to the Future Episode 5 Review

After such a long journey that has taken us from here to there and everywhere in between … how will it all end? Doc went missing and was stuck in the past where he “allegedly” burned down a speakeasy, we changed things just a bit and all of a sudden the Tannen Family owns Hill Valley in the present, changed the present AGAIN by messing with the past and making it more future than present and even tried to cure a severe case of puppy love between a poodle and a vicious pitbull. Did it all work? The Hill Valley Science and Technology Exposition is the main setting available for this episode (not just any Expo…this IS the Expo of the Future!) and you’ll spend about 80% of your time going from stand to stand, marveling at all the technological wonders mere inches away from you. After all we’ve been though in this series the final episode feels a bit more streamline (which is good) and you won’t run into a real “scratch your head” problem until you’re in the second half of it and that is only if you’re going for a trophy that requires you to be very specific about the order in which you do things. Edna Strickland starts things off by accusing Marty of being an agitator, a spy, a communist and so on after she had a very interesting conversation with Mr. Carl Sagan (Future Doc this time around and not our Doc Doc as was the case back in Episode 1) the night before the Expo was set to begin. Wonder what they could have talked about and how we can find out about it so we can fix any problems they might create? You thought Edna was a crazy girl? Wait until you play THIS Episode! She’s baaaaaaaaaad news, all kinds of bonkers and a psycho. Some people can eventually change and grow up after a troubling experience but Edna just puts more gasoline into the fire and watches as the flames reach the sky! It’s no wonder how she ended up alone in the original timeline since just 5 minutes can show you how high maintenance she is and how many screws are missing from that loosely bolted in head of hers. Your main objective during the last episode is making sure that Young Emmet gets a chance to participate in the Hill Valley Science and Technology Exposition even if Edna and Future Doc are trying to end his scientific career before it gets a chance to get of the ground… literally. Emmet goes missing just as the Expo gets started and we all know that if he doesn’t get a chance to participate as a young inventor then he’ll never grow up to be an adult inventor. No inventor means no Doc. No Doc means no DeLorean time machine. No DeLorean time machine means no time travel. No time travel means… it’s time for Marty to start disappearing and cease to exist! There are several clever puzzles to solve this time around and I think that the trophies make more sense by the time we’ve hit episode 5 than they did all the way back on episode 1. Maybe it has more to do with being used to the UI and the controls than it has to do with the way the finale is presented to us? Too many variables! Michael J. Fox is part of the game this time around and provides the voice for some of the cast. You’ll know who when you run into them and if you’re a fan of the movies (which you should be) it will definitely bring a smile to your face. It’s always nice to see the original cast be part of the game based on the movie based on awesome source material.. especially when that game is actually fun and not a quick cash-in developed in 3 months with a colorful case cover! Back to the Future: The Game has been a great experience for the last couple of months that gives us several “what if” scenarios as to what could have happened had a fourth movie been developed. Episode 5 allows the series to go out with a bang and leaves the door open for a Season 2 if you guys go out and buy a season pass RIGHT NOW. Your $19.99 purchase will deliver to you 12-20 hours of fun and nostalgia all wrapped up in a digital bow that sparkles when you smile. Now let’s start preparing for Jurassic Park and Walking Dead… Review Pros Cons Nice surprise at the end for fans of the movies so stay until the credits start! Good closure to the series It’s over! The Weekly Recap (July 10th-16th)

Recap It seems like every time I get around to writing articles, the week always seems to be busy. Until I do the recap, and realize how little activity there actually was. As far as counted articles go (which doesn’t include weekly posts like blu-ray releases, the podcasts, recaps, etc and posts about the site/community), we only had a total of 12 articles and 13 QuickNews. What were some of this week’s highlights, though? Well, I expressed my love for War of the Monsters and how it would be a perfect PSN game. I also posted the heart breaking news of Netflix changing up its subscription plans. Eddie also posted an article about Sony supporting smaller developers (and, apparently, dedicated $20 million to PSN game development). A new Sanits Row 3 trailer featuring the pre-order bonus pack was released, and, as expected, it was ridiculously over the top. We’ve also had trailers for Batman: Arkham City and Driver: San Francisco. As far as reviews go, EdEN had posted his for Alien Zombie Megadeath and Back to the Future: Episode 4. I also posted a review, this time for an active HDMI cable. I was trying to get my inFamous 2 review up last week as well, but personal life came up. I do have most of it written already, though, so expect that sometime this week for sure. As always, be sure to read all of the recap. Maybe you missed something this week that might have interested you? Community News & Game Nights Tosh has made it so anyone who participates in a BlogCast gets 200 points . If you want to earn points easily, that’s a chance for you to do so! It’s very casual, laid back, and conversational. Most of the time, we record on Wednesday night at 6PM, Pacific. You can also earn 100 points for emailing us and 150 for leaving us a voicemail (@ PS3-888-BLOG – US number). We will read mail on air, as well as putting the audio from voicemails in there. Be sure to listen to Episode 9 when you get a chance! The Red Johnson’s Chronicles giveaway ends tonight, so be sure to get your last minute entries in for this excellent title. There will be three winners. If point and click mystery games aren’t your thing, we also have a chance for you to win the far more frantic Alien Zombie Megadeath , which ends Thursday night. I’m not sure how many winners will be chosen here, though. 12 Articles // 13 QuickNews Contributor of the Week EdEN – 4 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Sakinah & CHEETO – 3 Entries Most Liked Jay – Remembering War of the Monsters – 1 Like Most Comments Jay – Netflix Subscription Plan Update – 20 Comments Earlier this week I had posted a reminder about our Gran Turismo 5 tournament, which is still scheduled for the 24th (one week from today). In fact, we have a site trophy you can get just for hosting your first one. The only thing you have to do is apply to be a writer and you can simply opt to just host game nights. Basically, it goes from the low-end amount to the higher end (so if you aren’t familiar with those forms of money, anything over $50 is usually one of the full games or if you got a full year of PS+). – How much have you spent at the PSN Store since it went back online? [E3 2011] Dragon’s Dogma (CAPCOM)

Here, in all its glory, are 2 videos straight from E3 2011 that help showcase what is shaping up to be one of the highly anticipated action games for 2012: Dragons Dogma. There’s definitely a Demon’s Souls vibe going on, which is always a very good thing. Here is some gameplay for your entertainment. I must admit, this is looking like a must have for any fan of the hack and slash, dungeon crawling, shadows and flames genre: Next, we have the official press release from CAPCOM to round things up with all the information you’ll need in the short term: FEATURES – Highly Stylized Action Combat – The creators of this game were responsible for the action hits – Resident Evil® 4 and Devil May Cry® 4. – Fight with Ability – The soul of combat comes down to how the game is played, where you strike the enemy, and how you react to their attacks. – Accessible Depth – Bringing an unprecedented level of depth to the action genre, every decision has an effect on gameplay in an intuitive way that does not require micromanagement. The weight of your weapon, the material of your armor – even the length of your legs – plays a role in how you fight your battles, but does not interrupt the flow of the action. – Epic Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma is built from the ground up as an action experience for consoles with a continuous, epic storyline that stands alone in style, scope and substance. – Open world – Utilizing Capcom’s proprietary MT Framework engine and the groundbreaking graphical styles and lighting effects used in Resident Evil® 5 and Lost Planet® 2, Dragon’s Dogma expands the environment to create a vast, richly detailed world, ripe for exploration. – Night and Day – The open world features a dynamic 24-hour day/night cycle that will offer different enemies and surprises depending on when you venture into the world. – Pawn Them All – The pawn system offers flexible combat assistance with main pawn companion that you can train throughout the game and two secondary pawns that can vary wildly to fit your combat style. – A rich population – In addition to interacting with hundreds of fully voiced NPCs, you’ll be able to fight a large variety of creatures, from goblins to griffins and dragons. Each enemy requires a different strategy and provides a unique experience. InFamous 2 “The Beast” Trailer

A new trailer has been released by Sucker Punch entitled, “The Beast”. With the game nearing its release, Sucker Punch has began releasing info on what keeps the story moving forward. This is what Nate Fox, the director, had to say: Contains some spoilers What’s the Beast, you ask? Like a meteor from outer space it’s a force of destruction too powerful for humanity to contain. At the end of inFamous, Cole MacGrath was given a vision that the Beast would arrive into the world and that he alone could stop it. The safety of our species was put on his shoulders. No pressure right? As you might imagine Cole would do anything in his power to get ready for the fight. He’s desperate to win, to save the lives of his friends and neighbors. . But at the start of inFamous 2 he fails. The Beast arrives and Cole isn’t strong enough. He’s forced to run south to New Marais and prepare for a second, final encounter while his home, Empire City, is swallowed in flames. . Have you ever failed at anything? Ever been dumped or fired or beat up? Ever tried your hardest and still lost? It’s sucks, right? Makes you feel hollowed out, weak. Like you don’t matter. Of course it’s exactly those moments that forge you into in a stronger person. I believe that we are defined by our failure more than our successes. Once you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and OVERCOME the thing that beat you, that’s when you really win. That’s when you’ve surpassed your past self. In inFAMOUS 2 you, help Cole get there. You guide him through New Marais; searching for new, stronger powers. Along the way you’ll meet potential allies who could help in your fight against the Beast. And you’ll need the help… the monster is moving down the coast, burning the landscape, getting stronger as it centers in on New Marais. Your back is against the wall, with only a few days to prepare for that second chance. Soon it’ll be time to overcome the things that have beaten you in the past. Are you up for it? After all, the Beast is Coming. Interested in the Hero Edition but aren’t sure if it is worth the money? Take a look at the photos below of what to expect. The hero edition will be $99.99 and will release 6/7/11 and will include the following: inFAMOUS 2 game Exclusive limited edition 8.5″ Cole MacGrath statue Replica sling pack Super voucher that gives access to in game content – including the Lightning Hook Power, Electrocution Grenade Power, Kessler Skin, and 24K Gold Amp weapon variant Mini inFAMOUS #1 comic from DC Comics Official inFAMOUS 2 soundtrack Source: PSBlog Gameconnect

PlayStation Network Outage: FooBear408 Weighs In

It’s been a while since I’ve written an article/rant for a while and I’ve kept quiet for some time now about the whole Playstation fiasco – until now. Read on… Let’s set the record straight: Timeline of Events April 19, 2011. 4:15PM PDT – Sony Network Entertainment America (SNEA) network team detects unauthorized activity in the network of 130 servers. Specifically, machines were “rebooting when not scheduled to do so.” Analysis begins. April 20, 2011. Early Afternoon – SNEA engineers discover evidence of “unauthorized intrusion” and that data had been removed with PlayStation Network servers. PlayStation Network shut down by engineers, taking 77 million registered PlayStation Network and Qriocity accounts offline. Sony retains service of computer security and forensic consulting firm. April 21, 2011 – Sony retains services of second computer security and forensic consulting firm. April 22, 2011 – Nine of ten compromised servers are mirrored by Sony and security firms. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) general counsel provides FBI with information about the intrusion. A meeting with the FBI is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27th, 2011. April 23, 2011. Afternoon – Forensic teams confirm that intruders used “very sophisticated and aggressive techniques to obtain unauthorized access, hide their presence from system administrators, and escalate privileges inside the server.” April 24, 2011. Easter Sunday – Sony retains additional forensic team with “highly specialized skills” to “determine the scope of the data theft”. April 25, 2001 – Teams confirm account details compromised, including name, address, country, email, birth date, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password, login, handle and network ID, but remain unsure if any of the 12.3 million global credit cards stored on the servers were compromised. April 26, 2011 – Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment America provide public notice of the intrusion and alert regulatory authorities in New Jersey, Maryland, and New Hampshire. April 27, 2011 – SCEA alert regulatory authorities in Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Puerto Rico. May 3rd, 2011 – Sony Chairman Kaz Hirai sends letter to Congressional Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade explaining details of intrusion. Now two things come to mind when reading that timeline: 1.  Fifteen days is a really long time for any conglomerate like Sony to take a hit and stay down as long as it has. 2. That entire timeline was “borrowed” from Kotaku.Com, mostly because I’m too lazy to write anything that in-depth. – But seriously folks…when was the last time something like this happened? Some time ago would be the correct answer. And what’s more, when it did happen, it wasn’t for very long. And it certainly wasn’t at the hands of some diabolical hacker group that has nothing else better to do than to ruin everyone else’s fun. Now, I’m quite positive that a little light googling would produce a better and more than accurate answer for the ‘net nerds, but let’s remember folks – laziness wins that round. I’ve personally had my PS3 since day one. I’ve bought controllers, then upgraded to the dualshocks. Then, my fat boy 80gb konked out and then I upgraded to the slim model (see one of my older articles for that story) and was able to get my 80gb repaired. Now it’s enjoying the leisurely life in office for some occasional Netflixin’ at the request of Mrs. FooBear. She enjoys it and has been known to rock the cotton candy pink dualshock on occasion.  What’s your point, Foo? My point is this loyal reader: how many countless hours upon hours of quality entertainment and next level online gaming has your PS3 provided you?  And let’s not forget – all at a cost of ZERO dollars to you, friend-o. I get it though, you pay for a product and you’d like it to perform the way it’s supposed to. And at the end of the day, you’d like to go online and knife some dude in the back who’s been camping all day on the “Berlin Wall” map for COD…but you can’t. It’s out of your control. The best thing you can hope for is yet – another vaguely worded “update” considering the future of the bigger, badder, faster, stronger PlayStation Network. And let’s get down to brass tacks already, OK? To all the whiners out there…knock it off. Stop it already, please? PlayStation will announce the restoration of the PSN Network when they’re good and ready. In the meantime, do what I’ve done and do work on single player campaigns on the games you’ve never even attempted single player on because you hop right online and go nuts. It’s true – search your feelings. Or you could tackle that taunting jigsaw puzzle of the Grand Canyon that’s spread out on your kitchen table that’s waiting for you. Waiting. Judging.  Watching. Laughing. Oh – you’ve lost a piece have you now? Well, looks like it’s time to send out a search and rescue team. But little do you know, it’s too late and the piece has been eaten by a little white ball of evil known to world as “Figby” and later will be regurgitated into a nice pile of rancid puke on your grandmothers living room carpet.  Sorry. Where was I? Oh yeah. Activities… my fearless gaming friend, are the spice of life. So go outside and ride a bike or do something productive. Any type of sunlight for some of you hardcore gamers is highly recommended. Community service is always a great way to give back and utilize your time in a productive. Keep in mind, that I would probably do none of these, but just the same, I would find something to occupy my time. Plus, I have Mrs. FooBear to irritate and entertain me. Not in that order of course, but the point being is that I have someone. In closing, we as a gaming community, have been through a heapload of horsesh*t and nothing would make me happier than to curl up on the couch and do work on some SOCOM 4, especially online portions of that fantastic game. Sadly, I can’t. There’s good news and bad news, though. The good news is this will be all over soon and we’ll be able to yell and curse at complete strangers and instantly feel better about ourselves. The bad news? You may have endure for a little while longer and actually develop some sort of skill set that you didn’t even know you were capable of. Just remember, the night is always darkest before the dawn. And yes, that’s from Batman.  Laziness, people.

Is It Bedtime? Did I Ask For A Story?

Yes. It is bedtime. And you will sit there and read every word I have to say. This story has charm, lovable characters, and paints a picture with words because the author is awesome. Let’s begin, dearest reader… There’s an old Chinese proverb that says, “mo money, mo problems.”…or something like that. I wouldn’t know because I don’t speak Chinese. I’ll tell you what I do speak – video games.  I’ve played video games since the tender age of thirteen, after begging the current adult/guardian in my life at the time for a gaming system. And, in the end, and after many hours of forced internment camp-styled labor that consisted of but wasn’t limited to: lawn mowing, car washing, weed pulling, and of course the dreaded “poop scoop patrol” duty, I got my desired gaming system of choice, and also a new found desire of appreciation for hard work. Years would follow and my permanent residence would turn out to be not so permanent. I would make friends and lose friends, but one thing that would remain constant would be my interest in gaming. Watching one of my current friends at the time, “Chris”, play his new PlayStation, I was amazed. After long hours of flipping burgers and then going to his house to play his PlayStation, we played this crazy game called Street Fighter. We would play for hours, so much so, it would be into the wee hours of the night. Sometimes even into the next morning, when Chris’ mom would come out and look perplexed as to how we were even still alert and awake. I, then, was thrust into different activities due to sport related things, and that whole pesky “Hey, want to go to college and play baseball for us?” at the time and had I had time to think about it; I, most likely, would’ve said no. Trust me, it was more work than fun and when you have a scholarship, it is less fun than a skillet full of rattlesnakes. I would finally finish obligations pertaining to school and other things that required my attention at the time, only to plunk down once again in my hometown of Portland, Oregon. Only to wander back into old habits of working even more soul crushing jobs, only this time, I got to wear a tie and some nice pants while I did them. I, eventually, contacted my old chum, Chris, who still lived at home with his momma. When I walked into his house – low and behold…the boxy black behemoth ( otherwise known as the PS2) lay in front of me. I officially felt jealous and a bevy of emotion swept over me when I played this technological wonder. The game? Gran Turismo. I, sadly, couldn’t game with my old buddy Chris until the morning like I used to because, now, I was responsible. I had a job and had to be a productive member of society. But there was a catch: I could buy my own system and had the money and did so the very next day. Let’s go ahead and do that dreamy fast forward button effect like they do in the movies and now I’m about 27 (give or take) years of age. Grown weary of the horrible weather in Oregon, I ventured forth for much greener pastures to the infamous “Golden State”. I moved to the hip-happening town of Vallejo. Not only known for it’s very anti-social citizen “The Zodiac Killer”, Vallejo seemed to get nothing but beautiful weather. Now, you have to remember, this is all very foreign to me – coming from the northwest – where the weather is worse than you can possibly imagine. So, this situation made me happier than a short legged horse in a hay field. Some time would pass and I would come into my own and become and long time resident of Vallejo, and, eventually, worked even more brain deadening jobs pertaining to financial/mortgage type jobs and, although it paid well, I, sadly, lost my soul somewhere in the process. I would end up working for a mortgage company and meet this rather odd fellow by the name of Derrick. Upon talking to this cat, I found that he and I shared the same interests. Which was cool, because everyone else I seemed to work with seemed to have the personality of a dead moth.  Derrick slumped over my cubicle wall and whispered to me in his office voice one day,” Yo. You getting a PS3?” I replied,” No. I have my PS2. And I got a ton of games I haven’t played yet…so I think I’ll wait.” Derrick gave me a most unsatisfactory look and sauntered back to his desk. Weeks would pass and I would find the whole world had purchased a PS3, except for me. Derrick graciously invited me over to his pad and asked me if I wanted to check out the PS3. I accepted his offer and went over there that night. I was absolutely blown away, and for the life of me, I can’t remember what game was on, but it was epic. I think I waited for about a month before I bought mine and was sad to see my boxy black friend go, but at the end of the day it was for the best cause. I often think about the days of gaming with my lanky pal Chris, and and how my friend, Derrick, showed me a whole new world. I think that nowadays, us as gamers are pretty spoiled when it comes to gaming news and developers now taking that extra step to include us with things like developer diaries and screenshots and gameplay footage; I think it can only get even better from here. So, the next time you hear something from someone you may not like, just remember that they may just know what the hell they’re talking about. And they probably live at home with their mom still. Or not.

The Weekly Recap (March 6th-12th)

Recap Yeah, I wound up being late again. It was a pretty hectic week for me, as I was busy editing video and the like for the site, and given slow upload speeds and slow rendering times for the videos, it was a long process (plus I had other things to do as well). Anyway, enough of my complaining. Last week was a relatively quiet week in terms of number of posts, but we did have a bit of news come out of that. First off, PS+ members finally got the save game cloud, which will come in handy for those who might get a YLOD and no way to get their saves back. We also got a look at the main villain of Uncharted 3, a new L.A. Noire gameplay video (as well as a collection of videos and trailers for other games; be sure to check all those out). We have our review for the PSN title, Stacking, up. Although there have been mixed reviews, this one does a good job of telling readers what to expect from the title. One of our members also posted an editorial of his favorite and least favorite games, and that sparked an interesting conversation, so check that out, too. As far as Sony, itself, goes, a few UK studios have had projects shut down to focus more on already-announced exclusive titles to keep their quality up and release in a timely manner. Sony was also affected by the earthquake in Japan, and had some of its plants shut down. If you can help with disaster relief in any way, please do so! PAX East also took place, and Luke managed to attend all 3 days. He got us a bunch of videos and interviews, and will also have an upcoming t-shirt giveaway. I wish something like PAX would happen here in Arizona, though . Community News & Game Nights If I recall correctly, we had this new chat system set up last week, but we didn’t describe new features until earlier this week, but it seems most people have figured it out anyway. Personally, I like the new system, but I wish staff, like myself, could engage in the private chats with anyone online, as opposed to having to be friends in order to use it, but that’s just me. Overall, though, it’s definitely a nicer system than the previous one we had, and makes private conversations much easier, as we no longer have to do that @@name to PM someone in the chat; and it’s more secure. There were a couple contests last week. First off, the winners of the InFamous 2 DLC codes can be found here . We also have the winner of the Cannon Fodder: Paper Wars contest as well. Hope you are enjoying the game! The SOCOM 4 contest for some beta keys started last week , and concluded this morning, so congratulations to the winners! 21 Articles // 16 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Jay – 7 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Beastxjason – 7 Entries Most Liked Jay – PlayStation Plus Getting Cloud Game Saves Starting Tomorrow – 3 Likes Most Comments Jay & Eddie – PlayStation Plus Getting Cloud Game Saves Starting Tomorrow & Uncharted 3 Villain Revealed [Update: Video] – 34 Comments We had held a March 10th Game Night in Killzone 3, in which Ace also posted some video of himself playing as well. As Tosh mentioned in our anniversary post, we are currently working on that, so be patient! As far as some other results go, more giveaways was an obvious choice for a lot of people, better copy editing was another (not sure what you’re asking for there; if you mean editing in general, we’re working on it ). A referral system got a few votes, as did those who said we’re awesome already. I also don’t know where the “Merge with thePlayStationshow.com” came from , but someone wants it to happen. Personally, I think that is very doubtful haha. Anyway, we will take your opinions into consideration and see what we can do to change it up for ya, but in a way that works, of course. New Poll Given the short amount of time needed for this poll, we will be skipping it for this recap, but on this week’s recap (which I hope will be up tomorrow), we will have a new poll for you.
