“Space Invaders: Infinity Gene” PS3Blog Review

There are few of us that remember “Space Invaders” being released on arcade back in June of 1978, as most of us here probably were not even born yet however there are even fewer of us that are not aware of the classic title that went on to be a foundation for video games for years to come. Game developer Taito (the company that brought us the original in 1978) and owner Square-Enix have joined together to bring us this new PSN title dubbed “Space Invaders: Infinity Gene”. A revamped, techno’d classic retro game with a quite a few changes and upgrades for nostalgic fans and younger curious gamers alike. The first thing you will notice about Space Invaders Infinity Gene is that there are several ways to play it. You could run through the fast paced chaotic “Normal Mode”, try your hand at the “Challenge Mode”, earn some of the “Bonus Stages” or even unlock and play “Music Mode” that allows you to use music saved on your PS3’s hard drive. Everything is earned through points. Unlocking new weapons, new BGM, new bonus stages, etc. Think of it sort of like XP earned towards unlockables. You have a level tree which is made to look sort of like what I would call a genome tree and branching off of it are each and every unlockable you have earned along the way. Gameplay – 6.0 While Space Invaders Infinity Gene is literally decades above and beyond the original, its still years behind any other recent top down shooter. 99% of the game is a simple forward progressive top down shooter where you have control to move in virtually any direction to kill off the super fast paced bad guys. Occasionally the plane is skewed at a 45 degree angle or they add a 3D element to it, but over all its a straight forward top down shooter. There are several weapons of which only 2-3 are useful at all but it does add a bit of strategy to each level and sometimes after unlocking a new weapon, its fun to go back to other levels to which it would be more useful. On higher difficulty settings, this game is unmerciful and relentless. Even on easy and normal I’ve caught myself shouting expletives on higher levels. With the exception of the bosses and some enemies, the game is pretty much the same on every level. Dodge and shoot. Graphics – 7.0 While the game is colorless, antiquated, lacking of any technological advancements in the past decade and not a far cry from great flash game, it holds a strong nostalgic, quaint and a “you can’t help but smile” design. Sound – 8.0 Here is where the game takes off but follows in the footsteps of many downloadable shooters this gen. With remixed techno music, it adds a nice setting to the game and sets up a nice beat to kill some aliens too. The X – Factor – 6.5 This game would be suitable for a $4.99 price or even push it to a $6.99 price but at its current $9.99 and weighing in at its tiny 91mb’s, I wouldn’t be able to help but feel a tad ripped off. While the game does offer some replay value for those of us that are a completionist, it simply does not hold up to even some of our average shooters that we can purchase for much cheaper right now. Looking for a game to score some quick trophies? Pass this game up. The trophies, minus a few bronze ones, do not come easy. Final Verdict – 6.9

Stranger’s PS3 Model is Vastly Improved

Not too long ago, it was officially announced that the Oddworld XBox exclusive title, ‘Stranger’s Wrath’, will be heading to the PS3 next year. I’ve always wanted to play it, but never got around to even renting it unfortunately. Anyway, the developer, Just Add Water, has recently unveiled the updated model for the title character, Stranger. The model is a jump from the original polygon count of 3,000 to 20,000, using newer rendering techniques like bump mapping, as well as, of course, updated textures. One thing to note, though, the PS3 model is almost on-par with the 529,000 polygon CGI model (at first glance, you can’t really see the difference). Hopefully we’ll see the same kind of work done to the rest of the game!

Blade Kitten Review from IGN

A review is up for Blade Kitten and I have to say that it is not a good score given at the end. Maybe the game is not for everyone, but such a low score does feel weird, especially when, at some points, it seems the reviewers only spent an hour or two with this release. I’ll try out the demo and see how it goes.

Alice: Madness Returns

American McGee’s Alice franchise is finally returning! EA plans to release the sequel sometime in 2011, eleven years after the debut of the first title. The original game, built on id Software’s Quake III Arena engine, was available only on the PC, but the new game is slated for the PC, PS3, and 360. The first Alice was a gleefully macabre first-person shooter, featuring crazily Escheresque level design and delightfully Freudian encounters with abjection. For years there was talk of a filmic version in the works, which was being heavily promoted by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Sadly that never panned out. But I’m thrilled that we’ll see a video game sequel. I’m also happy that McGee has forgiven Sony for canceling the PS2 port of the original game, a move that McGee blames for causing his software production company, Rogue Entertainment, to fold.

L.A Noire officially delayed into 2011

With a post-war backdrop of corruption, drugs and jazz, Rockstar has claimed it will "truly blend cinema and gaming". Rockstar’s much-anticipated L.A Noire definitely won’t see the light of day until January 2011 at the earliest. Parent Take Two said in its Q3 investor earnings call last night that the title would be out in the first half of calendar year 2011. That’s any time between January 1 and June 31. Take Two CEO Ben Feder said: “If a title needs more time, it needs more time – and we’re willing to give it. I will say about L.A. Noire that as I look around competitively at the marketplace, there is nothing else quite like it in terms of the gameplay and the technology behind it. We want to make sure we get it absolutely right.”

Next Gen PSP to Have Touch-Sensitive Controls

So, it sounds like Sony has, indeed, been in contact with multiple development studios already (3 of which had said Sony showed them the tech) and has pretty much confirmed that the next generation PSP will be getting touch sensitive controls. The design itself is said to be based on the PSP-3000’s rather than the Go (but that doesn’t mean the design won’t change later on down the road; it could wind up being something completely different altogether). Here’s what they had said about the controls, according to Eurogamer : …the screen is rich and detailed but the headline feature is the way games are controlled – by a touch-sensitive area on the back of the unit behind the screen. I’m not entirely sure how that’s going to work. Due to developer feedback, the new PSP2, or whatever it is to be called, will be using flash-based storage media rather than disc-based media; so much for UMD2 I guess . This has already stirred some controversy, as users won’t be able to get in on any retail sales on games due to the digital distribution model. Sony had shown the device with some first party titles that are in development, according to the source. Apparently, they are already settled on a business model for the unit, and is thought to be made available as soon as the end of 2011.

No Move support for Resident Evil 5

People are extremely angry as am I that Capcom is adding Move support to Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition and not the original Resident Evil 5. They claim that they cannot patch the original game so that it supports Move due to technical reasons. I have a hard time believing this to be true. It just doesn’t make sense how seemingly identical games could be different enough to cause that much of a problem. It just seems like Capcom isn’t trying at all and are only doing this to make a bigger profit. It makes absolutely no sense why the RE fans that went out and bought the game when it was first released are being snubbed over people that waited over a year. It sends a message that the people that supported their game from day one are less important, and that maybe we should all wait a year to buy games just to make sure that we don’t miss out on a better version of the game that has more options and better support. If more fans did this, companies wouldn’t have made enough money on the game to make a gold edition in the first place. I get that video games are a multibillion dollar business and that companies make games to make money but we aren’t stupid. We have a pretty good idea when these companies are just trying to milk us and this is one of those times. I mean Capcom has been doing this to fans for years. We have all seen them milk game properties like Mega Man and Street Fighter II. At what point is enough, enough I think they are making a huge mistake and I really hope that Capcom changes their collective mind on this one. It’s a real tragedy that we all can’t enjoy this new feature over such a ridiculous issue and I refuse to buy the same game and DLC just to be able to do so. It’s insane to expect us to buy the same game twice especially those of us that bought all of the DLC as well. Capcom, you should be ashamed. Below is a link to the article featuring a review of Move controls in Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition and the scathing  responses to the lack of support for the original version.
