Shu Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios has just confirmed that The Legend of Dragoon will be available on PSN when the store updates on May 1st! He talks about the game, and gives us some insight as to how big this project really was: The Legend of Dragoon was one of the last projects I worked on as a producer in Japan Studio and by far the biggest team I managed hands-on. We started the project in 1996 with only a handful of people, hired one by one as we were building up teams for Ape Escape, The Legend of Dragoon, and Ico simultaneously. During the peak of the game’s development, we had well over 100 people working internally in the studio on The Legend of Dragoon — for a PSone game! We had roughly 10 artists dedicated just to drawing concept art for this gigantic RPG. As the game contained lots of pre-rendered maps and full-motion videos, we were forced to spread the content over four CDs, which was the maximum number of discs that the fattest PSone game case could hold. It took nearly three years to build the team and develop the game, which was released in December 1999 in Japan and June 2000 in the US. As I moved from Japan to the US in March 2000, I was able to personally handle the game’s release in both Japan and the US. Following the game’s launch in Japan, we learned from players that certain parts of the game were too difficult. The team re-balanced the gameplay for the release outside of Japan, so the US version was the complete version of the game that we were all proud of. No price has been revealed but, considering the size of the game, I expect it to be $9.99 (and well worth it).

This morning was just like every other morning. Then, it happened. No one knows where they came from, or what they are. But we all know that nothing will ever be the same. Now, your only chance for survival is to outrun the destruction of your city… with just one button. Run for your life! Canabalt PlayStation minis trailer from Beatshapers on Vimeo . When you wake up to a robot invation, you can only do two things: run, and run faster! Canabalt hails from the year 2009 (yes, that does sound like a long time ago), and it was the start of the auto runner craze. What is an auto runner? It is a game on which your character runs automatically (get it?) without any outside input. You usually only have control over him with a single button that allows him/her to jump. Other games have added a double jump, or even another button to allow you to fire ( heeeellooo One Epic Game! ), but the basic concept is still there. Canabalt is all about running until you die, always hoping to escape the madness that is brought by GiantKillerRobotsTm, when they decide to invade somewhere. You will need to jump from building top to building top while avoiding any obstacles that might make you sit down for a cup of coffee with the Grim Reaper. The more time that your character spends running, the faster he will continue to run. This is great when you want to outrun an off-screen menace, but it is not that great when you’re trying to make a precise jump over then void that is imminent dead. By hitting small obstacles, you can slow down a bit, but you must be careful to not slow down too much, or else you won’t be able to make the next jump. A bit of a Catch-22 since you can’t see how big the next jump is if you’re going to slow, but going too fast means you could jump OVER the whole building, falling down to the far, far away land of concrete floor. You must also avoid “death from above” objects, that are either missiles or discarded arms from the GiantKillerRobotsTm. Hitting those will bring you to a halt, and your game will be over in a flash. Why? Because you’re crashing into a very hot piece of metal that is bigger than you, and when you combine human flesh with hot, smoldering metal… Some buildings are just waiting for you to set foot on top of them to start crumbling down. Guess all the pigeons on the rooftop were not heavy enough to destroy the whole thing. But the pigeons sure look nice when they fly away, trying to avoid you at all cost. Canabalt is a small and minimalistic game that you should definitely add to your collection. The Auto runner extraordinaire is still fun after all these years, and you can now enjoy it on your PS3, your PSP or your Vita. How far can you run before you just can’t run anymore? Review Pros Cons Great art and music One button controls Random levels are not for everyone Rating 80% Cost – $2.99 Disclaimer Total amount of time played: 3 hours. This review is based on a PS3/PSP copy of Canabalt obtained from Beatshapers.

Vic Ireland from Gaijinworks, and MonkeyPaw Games have decided to join forces, and bring us a great opportunity to show our support for the idea of bringing “Japan-only” RPGs to this side of the pond. MonkeyPaw Games has been hard at work securing the rights to several titles for the PSX that, up until recently, had been sentenced to a “import from Japan” fate. And Vic Ireland has been doing this for yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars. Wait, what? You don’t know who Vic Ireland is? For shame! For those of us that were fortunate enough to own a PSOne many, many years ago, Vic Ireland’s Working Designs was a godsend. Several games that had been released on the Sega CD (an attachment that allowed the Genesis to play CD based games), as well as others that had been hit with the dreaded “Japan-only” stick, were brought to the PSOne by Working Designs. And they did so in style. That right there is the Collector’s Edition for Lunar: Eternal Blue, a box filled to the top with collectibles, great artwork, a soundtrack CD, a pendant, and even a Hardcover Instruction booklet/artbook. Looks great, right? Well, I’m proud to own that one, along with the CE for Arc the Lad Collection and their final release: Growlanser Generations CE. After this, Working Designs had to go into the sunset, but with a new day came a new chance to make a change: Vic Ireland started Gaijinworks, a company that would carry on with the legacy of Working Designs while, at the same time, acknowledging the changes that digital releases have brought to the industry. Kickstarter has proved that when fans crave and desire a specific product, and you bring it to them, they will open up their wallets. Double Fine found success with their “we’re making an old-school point and click adventure game”, and Brian Fargo is now working on a sequel to Wasteland. Vic Ireland and MonkeyPaw Games are now askign for your money to open up the flow of JRPG releases, and their first release will be Class of Heroes 2 for the PSP . There are several levels for your pledges, and the higher you go, the better the rewards. The centerpiece of it all is a physical, UMD release of Class of Heroes 2, complete with a CE to do he game justice. Vic Ireland himself has this to say: We’re offering a Physical Deluxe Pack of Class of Heroes II for the PSP® system that will be the craziest Deluxe Pack we’ve ever done. And if you know our work at Working Designs, that’s a pretty high bar already. This will NOT have digital content you download. It will NOT have codes for in-game armor or weapons. It will NOT have a picture flip book passed off as an art book. It will not ship with DLC on the disc you have to pay for again later. It will NOT come in a tin box passed off as Steelbook. It will NOT be what’s usually advertised as a Collector’s Edition in 2012 – a wimpy, atrophied shadow of what a real Deluxe Pack should be. It will be an awesome Deluxe Pack with real, collectible, limited, awesome stuff based on the game, including an arranged soundtrack. Please, go over to their Kickstarter page and start making your pledges, so we can finally return to a golden age when THIS is how a Collector’s Edition looked like:

After teasing us about it on twitter with some very creative pics , XSEED Games has officially confirmed that they are bringin Unchained Blades to the US! Originally released as UnchainBlades ReXX in Japan last summer and developed by FuRyu, Unchained Blades is a role-playing game set in a monster-filled world, and was directed by Toshio Akashi of the Lunar series, while the game’s story was penned by Grandia series veteran Takashi Hino. “We at XSEED Games are delighted with the opportunity to bring a title like Unchained Blades to North American gamers,” said Ken Berry, Director of Publishing at XSEED Games. “Unchained Blades represents a collaboration between some of Japan’s most high-profile developers and artists, offering a unique blend of classic RPG gameplay paired with an eclectic mix of art styles.” We’ll be able to get the game later in the year, as a digital-only release (as was the case with their last PSP release, Corpse Party) to enjoy either on PSP, PSP GO or Vita. I’ll be sure to let you know about the release date and price as soon as they tell me about it!

Help legendary star fighter pilot Ace Armstrong defeat the Scumbag invasion of earth in this modern take on classic old-school shoot-em-ups, with an added 50s Sci-Fi twist and plenty of Scumbag-bursting humour. Fly Ace through several action-packed levels, each featuring a huge boss with unique attack patterns to defeat! Use Ace’s mighty Recycl-o-Ray to suck up the essence of defeated Scumbags and use their own weapons against them. Can you turn back the Scumbags’ tentacled tide of terror?! Controls are very simple to understand. You can move Ace’s ship either with the D-Pad or the analog stick (I used the D-pad to get the proper old school feel), and shooting your standard cannons is handled by the X button. You can use the L or R button to vacuum in the weapon energy left behind by some of the Alien Scumbags, and you can shoot these extra weapons with the Square or Circle buttons. You can still shoot your standard cannons while you’re doing this, so be sure to never stop firing or the Aliens will get you! Also, when you suck in a new weapon, your current one is immediately discarded, so make sure you really want to get rid of it before hitting either shoulder button. What weapons can you take from your enemies? You have access to a laser, to a spread shot, to a 3-way shot, and exploding shot, and a veeery powerful shot that can quickly kill all enemies in 1 or 2 shots at most. The more powerful the weapon, the lower number of shots you have available, so be sure to plan accordingly. A strong weapon in your arsenal when facing a boss can be the difference between survival and defeat. Before you start the game, you are given the option of picking one of the three difficulty settings available (Rookie, Pro and Elite). You should start on Rookie to get an idea of how the game works, as diving right into Pro or Elite can prove to be too much for most. Picking a higher difficulty cuts down the number of extra ships you start with AND aliens are stronger, thus requiring to be shot more times in order to be destroyed. You must quickly understand how to differentiate the things that can kill you from those that are there just for show, especially since all that it takes to bring down your ship is one hit. You can crush against scenery, aliens, spaceships, etc., and it is easier to know what scenery is physically there, and which one is just for show, by constantly firing with X. You can also autofire when holding down X, but you can definitely fire faster by constantly pressing X, thus allowing you to destroy more enemies. When you reach the end of the level, you’ll fight against a huuuuge boss. Learning their pattern is a must, or you’ll never defeat them. Be prepared to lose several ships during this fights if you’re not careful. Luckily, if all your lives run out, you can choose to immediately go on, as long as you have any continues left. Ace Armstrong vs the Alien Scumbags provides us with a fun game that takes us back to simpler times when 2D sidecrollers were all the rage. The art-style and gameplay mechanics allow this minis release to set itself apart from the rest of the options available in the service. Review Pros Cons Easy to control Several weapons you can use Crashing into a building before being able to realize that structures are bad Rating 81% Cost – $3.99 Disclaimer Total amount of time played: 3 hours. Game was completed before writing this review. This review is based on a PS3/PSP copy of Ace Armstrong vs the Alien Scumbags provided by Laughing Jackal.

With the release of the PS Vita set for February 22nd, more and more Vita games are starting to show up at retail (and on PSN) for all new buyers to get their game on. While not as crazy packed as last week, we do have eight PS Vita releases as well as two PS3 retail releases and two “now on PSN” formerly retail-only games. Not only that, but we are also getting two minis releases with Hungry Giraffe (for which we’ll have a review soon!) and Touchdown Fever, as well as one PS2 Classics release thanks to Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers. Overall, this is a good week for all PS fans and especially for PS Vita fans since we have to remember that all Vita games you buy directly at the PSN Store will give you access to a 10%+ discount! Full list of games after the break. PS3 Retail Releases You Can Buy Asura’s Wrath Right Here! You Can Buy Syndicate Right Here! PSN Releases You Can Buy Mafia II Right Here!
The last week of the month is here and we finally start to get more than one retail releases as publishers realize that we actually like to purchase games all year long (and not only during the holiday rush). The three retail releases bring something for everyone, as we’re getting Final Fantasy XIII-2, sequel that is supposed to “fix” everything that was wrong with FF XIII (which, if you ask me, was nothing at all), Soul Calibur V (fighting games are back in style!) and NeverDead (a game that is so weird, that I’ll just point you to the trailer so you can see what it’s all about ). On PSN, the only new release is Puddle. Other than that, we get some formerly retail only games that are now part of the digital service. Full gallery after the jump: PS3 Retail Releases You Can Buy Final Fantasy XIII-2 Right Here! Or maybe you want the Awesome Collector’s Edition! You Can Buy Soul Calibur V Right Here!
