The Weekly Recap (March 27th-April 2nd)

Recap Got this one in relatively on time. Last week…what a week. First of all, my April Fools post. It ended up being very controversial, and I am sorry if that offended anyone, as that wasn’t the intention. The whole point was to trick people into thinking games were delayed, not poking fun at the earthquake itself, nor people who were actually laid off. Sorry if you took it the wrong way. Now, with that out of the way, let’s look at some highlights. First of all, Jason expressed his concern over GameStop selling opened games as new. FooBear408 attended the FEAR 3 multiplayer event in San Fran during the week, and provided a live blog, as well as got us some free stuff to give you guys. Word has it that the PS3 has outpaced the 360 as far as active units goes, which is quite a feat. DICE has gone out and basically said “bring it” to their rivals, referring to the upcoming title, Battlefield 3, which many believe to be the Call of Duty killer. Wal-Mart is getting some exclusive DLC for L.A. Noire (apparently, a few retailers will be getting exclusive content, which is no surprise). Virtua Tennis 4 is also slated to have some exclusive content only available on the PS3 in the form of mini-games, including one requiring the Move. Last week was also a busy one for reviews. We have EdEN’s review of Slam Bolt Scrappers and Vertigo (which also includes a giveaway). Luke reviewed Back to the Future: Episode 1, and Jason gave us his take on Warriors: Legends of Troy. With that said, we still have more upcoming reviews, including my WWE All-Stars review, which will be up soon after I get my PS3 back from Gophermods. Community News & Game Nights Not much of anything new, really. Apart from the previously mentioned controversy and the like, we do have double points going on from now until on or around the 18th, so it is definitely a good idea to take advantage of that while it’s around . Currently, we still have the Portal 2 giveaway going on, of which, the end date has been moved to the 18th . Be sure to enter that if you haven’t done so already! This contest probably has more ways to enter than any other contest we’ve done in the past, so there are plenty of ways to do so, even if you’re low on points. We also have a chance for you to win Vertigo for the PSP. If you’re interested, be sure to check out EdEN’s review , and click on the giveaway tab for details. Also, if you like free swag, until tomorrow night, you can also win a free aluminum F.E.A.R. 3 bottle, courtesy of FooBear. Just leave a comment here and one will be chosen at random. And finally, congratulations to the winner of the 500 points , Cazamalos! 24 Articles // 14 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Jason – 6 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Oly, Luke, & Jason – 3 Entries Most Liked Jay- Sony to Lay Off More Staff; Uncharted 3 Delayed Until 2012 – Not True – April Fools – 24 Likes Most Comments Jason – Gamestop Selling Open Games as New – 36 Comments I’m not entirely sure if another Game Night will take place this week, but Tosh hosted one for Killzone 3 last Thursday, though, I haven’t seen a recap post yet. And, of course, like those who think they’re a great idea, some folks have voted and said that they are too hard to accomplish, which I, myself, agree with since some of them are going to require teamwork and you would need good communication between players for that. Very mixed opinions on this one for sure. New Poll This new poll was suggested by chealampalma , asking if you were able to design a game, which genre would you pick? This, for me, would be a pretty hard one, as there are a lot of genres I enjoy. With all said and done, it might end up being a racing simulation game that takes all the best aspects from Gran Turismo, Forza, Need for Speed, DiRT, etc and puts it all into one supergame. Remember, if you don’t see the genre listed, you have the ability to add an answer as well. – If you could design a game, which genre would it be? The Weekly Recap (March 27th-April 2nd)

The Weekly Recap (March 13th-19th)

Recap Yep, another late one. I’m still trying to find time to do things, but between dealing with back pain and stressing out over other things, the days seem to go by in a flash. I’ve been spending most of my time on here lately helping around the community and working with some of you on a few things to help better the site. Anyway, Tosh has updated my title somewhat. As you know, I’ve been officially labeled as the Community Manager for a little while now. As of this week, I also have the position of Editor-in-Chief. Though, keep in mind, some articles will go through with an occasional error here and there, but I will fix errors if I come across them. If you find one, and I missed it, let me know and I will fix it . Now, as for what went on from the 13th to the 19th, and what stories stuck out. We got a few more videos from Luke’s visit to PAX East this year, which all include gameplay. Despite not being able to record it, he also managed to check out Battlefield 3, which is sure to blow everyone’s mind. Darrin managed to go to SXSW, which happened during PAX, and didn’t let us know (so we didn’t have a live blog or anything), but he did write his own recap of the event. Eddie, once again, got a bunch of NGP articles compiled to keep us up to date on what is going on with our future favorite handheld (subjective, of course). As for Kevin Butler, he showed off his S.H.A.F.T. method for MLB 11: The Show, so for a good laugh, check those out. We also have reviews for MotorStorm Apocalypse and TNT racers by Trev and EdEN, respectively. Beyond that, Jason has been busy posting gaming deals and the like, which is a nice feature, but I will try to work with him to make them more pleasing to the eye, so bear with me! Be sure to read through the list of articles, both front page and QuickNews, as there is always more to read than what I talked about here. Also, don’t forget, you can donate to the Red Cross to help with the Japanese tsunami relief through PSN (the denominations are fixed, but it’s a worthy cause, and you get a free theme). Community News & Game Nights It’s been 6 years since we posted our first article. With that, we had a giveaway for a $20 PSN card (linked below). Not much in new features, but we did get a new chat system , which makes personal chats and private chat rooms possible. Definitely a nice upgrade. For the past few weeks, and upcoming weeks for that mater, the number of giveaways we’ve had/are having has picked up quite a bit. First of all, as I said on the last recap, winners of the SOCOM 4 beta have been announced. Since then, we’ve also had a Slam Bolt Scrappers giveaway , and even had that $20 PSN card giveaway for the blog’s 6 year anniversary. Luke has also acquired a number of t-shirts from PAX we will be using, including the Aperture Science t-shirts we’re giving away with Portal 2. It’s always a good idea to come by and see what we have going on for contests! Usually, you can spot those announcements in the green box in the sidebar. 22 Articles // 15 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Luke – 8 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week Jason – 8 Entries Most Liked Oly – Kevin Butler’s S.H.A.F.T. Jcmdaddy had scheduled an Uncharted 2 game night on the 17th, with a recap of the event the next day. The Weekly Recap (March 13th-19th)

Bulletstorm Review

When I buy a first person shooter I know exactly what I’m getting into gameplay wise. For me the reason I play them is primarily for the story, which to be honest isn’t a major part of most FPS games nowadays. They’ve mostly done away with the story and focused on pure multiplayer elements. Now I’m not saying this is the case with every FPS there is, there are still those that have a good story line, but let’s be honest most of the stories are sub-par compared to other genres. Your idea of a good story and mine could vary by a lot, so I’m not going to list off games that I like and think stand out above the rest. The only reason I bring up the lack of story is because that wasn’t what drew my attention to Bulletstorm in the first place, it was the gameplay. The idea of having a real time indicator of the carnage that I’d be unleashing intrigued me. So at midnight on February 21st, I went to GameStop and picked up both Bulletstorm and Killzone 3, then quickly rushed home, popped in Bulletstorm, loaded it up, and began. The story to the game is fairly generic: a band of mercenaries is out for revenge to kill their former commander, who was using them to kill innocent people by lying about who they were and what they “have done” to deserve a quick death. The main function of any story is to propel the game further so you’re constantly moving to the next objective. You play through the game as Grayson Hunt, formerly of the secret military group called Dead Echo. You’re accompanied through most of the game with a colleague of his named Ishi, who after an accident has robot parts used to keep him alive, so now he’s basically a cyborg who is always struggling with the AI computer that was fused to his brain. You’ll hear a lot of foul mouthed dialogue between these two, which I’ve read in most other reviews that it “gets tiring quickly and undermines any attempt at serious storytelling” which may be the case for some, but not me. I love the dialogue! It’s over the top and out of control. It’s not that it’s targeting some hidden, adolescent part of me that prays for chances for crude and rude humor, no; it’s because of who the voice actors are. Voicing Hunt is Steve Blum, who, in my opinion, is the most recognizable voice actor there is (apart from Nolan North now) due to his legendary role as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop. Though he’s no stranger to video games, he’s done the voices for characters like Ares from God of War, Gene from Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, as well as Ramon Galvez Mena in MGS: Peace Walker. Then, there is Jennifer Hale (who does the voice for Trishka Novak, a character you meet up with later in the game, who, like Hunt, has her fair share of raunchy dialogue). She’s done voices for a lot of games as well, but you might recognize her best as Naomi Hunter from Metal Gear series. Hearing these familiar voices curse left and right is amusing, especially since I’ve been so used to them being these other, more reserved characters. The best example I can give is when I watched Gran Torino in theaters, and hearing Clint Eastwood use those racial slurs left and right made me laugh so hard. They were slurs I’d never heard of, since I didn’t grow up around people who used them, so having him drop one every second was wildly amusing. To think people actually talked (and still do) like that just seemed so absurd, and I couldn’t help but laugh. Just don’t let the writing put you off; it’s all in good fun. In the beginning, you don’t get access to the oh-so-fun-to-use energy leash right off the bat. You have to wait for the story to advance far enough before you finally stumble upon one of these toys of mayhem. Once you do, you then get access to the highlight of this game: skillshots. With this toy, you get to grab foes from their hiding place and yank them back to you. This move causes them to slow down and hover in the air, as if you’ve caused them to drop into a slow motion animation. The few seconds they’re crippled allows you to kick them into surrounding environmental hazards, such as explosive barrels, cacti, electrical fields, or even off the edge of a cliff. You can even do a power slide into enemies which causes them to go into the same suspended animation. The “kill with skill” tag that’s used is there for a reason,; the more skillful you take someone down, the more points you get. You use these points to unlock weapons, so you’re allowed to buy upgrades, ammo, and “Charge Shots,” which are an alternative fire. There are different skillshots you can perform depending on which weapon you currently have equipped, and each one has its own name to go along with it, such as “Gang Bang,” which involves using the Flailgun, which shoots two grenades linked by a chain causing them to wrap around an enemy, then you wait for his buddies to run by and BAM! You blow those bad boys sky high. What I love most about these skillshots is that what you do is directly displayed on the screen. So it’s no long the hidden trophy that most games have, where you try to pull off a difficult shot and then wait for that trophy sound to go off along with the window in the top right of the screen. With the text popping up showing you constantly what you’ve done and the points you get for pulling it off, you get a greater sense of reward. This feedback system is what moves the game along. Each new weapon, as I’ve said, gives you more and more skillshots to perform, each unique to the gun. My favorite weapon by far is the sniper rifle, which, when zoomed in, pops up little diamond targets over each enemy, you then line up your shot and the target goes red, once fired you follow the bullet along until the last few yards when you drop into a bullet time effect (did I mention you control the bullet?! Inorite?), you get to guide it to any part of the guy you’re taking out. The “Charge Shot” for the sniper rifle allows you to shoot an explosive round, sounds awesome right? It gets better. You might be saying “How can that be?” because, not only do you get to control the bullet along with when it explodes, but hitting an enemy doesn’t detonate the round. You can move the poor guys’ body towards other enemies and then detonate it. The camera goes into a fixed state and you only have so long before the round finally goes off on its own, since you’re open to attack still. Though, it’s thoroughly enjoying to take out a whole group with one guided bomb. The multiplayer component of Bulletstorm is setup for co-op play in the form of a mode called Anarchy, which pits you and up to three others against waves of enemies. You work together to pull off team skillshots, and you have to have decent coordination to get the most points possible since that’s how each round is completed. Between rounds, you use the points you’ve earned to unlock new weapons and upgrade your stats, such as defense or speed. The only downside to this mode is playing with people you don’t know, and having them try to pull off a team skillshot can be frustrating, and I didn’t play it much with friends, so I haven’t spent too much time playing Anarchy. Multiplayer can be a bit laggy, which, of course, ruins the fun of it. There is a mode called Echoes, which lets you play through segments of the single player campaign with a goal of not only completing them with a lot of points, but with speed. Your score at the end of an Echo round is placed onto the leaderboards, so you can compare to your friends and others. Bulletstorm has some great visuals to boot; the venues have a lot of color and make the short breathers between fights seem like you’re sightseeing. The soundtrack to the game is adequate, though it feels like there could have been a little more to it, if they weren’t as focused on the visuals and gameplay. Though, really, you’ll be too focused on killing in new and creative ways to really care about the music. The game moves along quickly enough; broken down into several Acts, each with their own chapters. It took me about 8-9 hours to beat the game, though I played on Hard (I’ve recently decided to play all games on hard for now on, I’m really not sure why I always left them on normal for my first play through) so it might go a little quickly on easier modes. There was one issue I took note of, and that was a glitch that caused the game to forget that I had purchased the ‘Charge Shot’ function for a gun, and required me to repurchase it with my skill points. This wasn’t a huge issue, and it didn’t happen that often, though it was rather frustrating. I noticed it after I’d die and it would load back up, and I’d try to go to the little store pods to choose different weapons (since you can only carry up to three, and one HAS to be the assault rifle you start with). Another glitch I noticed was if I tried to change weapons in the last seconds when I die, once it reloaded, I would have my machine gun taking up my left weapon slot, with no ammunition in either slot. That was probably the most annoying, since it left me with one gun (though you can survive pretty well using the environmental traps to kick your enemies into). I’m sure these small blemishes won’t affect everyone, since I’ve known people to complain about a glitch in other games that I’ve never experienced, even on multiple play-throughs. All in all, Bulletstorm is very enjoyable. The story is predictable, and you even know what is going to happen after the credits roll. It’s the gameplay that stands out the most; the constant skillpoints being earned, and using the leash to pull enemies close to kick them into a man-eating plant never gets old. It really is a shame they couldn’t have worked out some sort of competitive multiplayer. I’d have to give this game a 9 out of 10 ; it’s a solid FPS single player experience.

MLB The Show 2011 Throwing System

I absolutely love how this year the players stats have nothing to do with errors. It is all player controlled! Well here it is in its original context. Ramone Russell // Community Manager, SCEA San Diego Studios Pure Analog Throwing offers a new way to experience fielding as you can now control both the accuracy and power behind your throws. Push the analog stick towards any base to release your throw, or hold L1 while pushing the stick in any direction to throw the ball from the outfield to the cutoff man. Holding the stick longer will put a little extra mustard on the ball, but make sure to keep your throws accurate by pushing the analog stick in a straight line. Keep in mind that you can adjust Analog Throwing difficulty to make your experience more enjoyable. Remember that all errors are user-controlled this year, meaning play on the field is no longer left to chance. As MLB 11 The Show boasts a dynamic error system, error margins are determined by individual player stats, so accuracy is a must! MLB 11 The Show is the most realistic baseball game ever because your team’s defensive performance is entirely in your hands! With a little practice, you’ll be filling up your trophy cabinet with Gold Gloves in no time! This is the last video in the series so get your copy next Tuesday! Source: PlayStation.Blog

Costume Quest & Grubbins on Ice DLC Review

Tim Schafer’s studio Double Fine, which created the innovative adventure/platformer “Psychonauts” and more recently the quirky Russian doll game “Stacking,” released the seasonally-themed light RPG adventure “Costume Quest” to PSN and XBLA on October 19, 2010. The game is a delightful bit of cotton candy fluff that features tongue-in-cheek but innocent humor, a solid if simplistic turn-based battle mechanic, and a healthy respect for the sense of empowerment that role-playing can bring to a kid or even to us, whether in a Halloween costume or through digital avatar. The game is suitable for everyone from a child who has never played an RPG before to an experienced and obsessional gamer (you know the type: the one who has to collect every single one of the five hundred useless doodads scattered throughout a game world). Costume Quest Review The conceit in Costume Quest is that your sibling has been carried off by interdimensional goblins (whom only kids can see!) who have invaded Suburbia, USA with the nefarious aim of stealing all the candy that they can lay their grubby little hands on. (The goblins are called Grubbins, by the way.) You choose at the outset whether you want to play as the brother or sister – a choice that has no impact on gameplay, but allows you to cast either gender in the role of hero and protector. But you need funds to accomplish your quest, and what’s a kid’s Halloween currency? Candy, of course! You must go house-to-house in the neighborhood trick-or-treating, and when the front door opens, you’ll either get a stash of candy or be confronted by a pugnacious goblin. When you enter combat, your little tyke in his/her costume cobbled from bedsheets, cardboard, duct tape, and the like grows into an enormous, superheroic instantiation of the costume type. So the hokey cardboard robot becomes a massive Voltron-like powerhouse. The goblins similarly expand, and you and your opponents face off in turn based battle looming high over the suburban houses. Combat is turn-based and rather simple. Each costume has a generic attack and a special power, which charges up over time. You must pay attention during combat as the mechanics are quite reminiscent of “Paper Mario,” in the sense that attacks have timed button press sequences (which are rather rudimentary) that when properly executed do extra damage or minimize the damage that your character takes from enemy attacks. What spices up the battle is that fact that throughout the game you gather patterns and materials that allow you to construct new costumes (eleven costumes in all), which mean new characters on the battlefield when you don these costumes. You also gather party members over the course of the game, whose costumes you choose and who fight alongside you. Finally, the candy that you collect can be traded for “battle stamps,” which are sort of like items that your characters can equip and which allow for different kinds of buffs and attacks when battling, from increased critical damage to stunning attacks to health regeneration. Different costumes have different special powers as well, from area-of-effect attacks to resurrection of downed allies. It’s fun tailoring one’s party to suit one’s play style. But by about half-way through the game, if you’re like me, you’ll have found a formula that works quite well, and you’ll have little reason to vary it. Also, the outcome of the battles will rarely be in question, especially if you pull of the critical attack button sequence (which isn’t a difficult achievement). Battling aside, much of the fun of the game lies in exploration of the three main game areas, which include the neighborhood, a mall, and country fairgrounds. One must solve various puzzles to progress through the game, which often rely on using the various costumes’ powers. Many costumes have powers that can be activated in the game world, not just on the battlefield. The robot costume has rollerblades, allows you to jump ramps to otherwise inaccessible areas, the knight’s shield protects you from falling rocks, and so on. Some of the puzzles require some thought and experimentation, often they are solved readily enough by hunting down missing components of a necessary costume. Along the way there are side-puzzles, mini-games, trading card collection opportunities, secondary quests, and so on. You won’t be confronted with major challenges, but the puzzles are quirky and fun. The game is quite amusing in a sometimes dopey sort of way. But it does a great job of using humor that is appropriate for kids (and doesn’t even resort to the bathos of potty humor and fart jokes – which is a minor annoyance in “Stacking”), while at the same time offering clever socio-political commentaries that adults will appreciate as well as making occasional popular cultural references. (My favorite is an allusion to the sadly defunct Fox sitcom “Arrested Development.”) The game’s visual aesthetic is unique and charming. It’s cartoony in a rather original way, which is consequently difficult to describe. It might be compared to Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” meets “Southpark.” But ignore whatever associations you might have with either of the above texts: I’m just talking cartoon style here, not message, ethics, or humor. The music is serviceable in a workman-like fashion (it gets repetitive), and there is no dialog. But hey, it’s a PSN title. “Costume Quest” is a fun diversion built on a satisfying and quirky adventuring premise. It’s a fun world to explore and to master, and it is one of those rare games that is rewarding for both kids and adults. A speed run-though might only take a few hours, but plan on eight or so hours if you intend to explore all the crevices, finish all the side quests, and collect all the PSN trophies (of which there are twelve, including one gold and four silver). The main downside is that battle eventually becomes repetitive and is always win-able, except in the rare boss fights, which can provide slightly greater challenge and which sometimes require particular costumes and battle-stamp combinations to win. I would have liked to see a little more variety in battling options and strategic opportunities, but I recognize that the fighting mechanic is designedly somewhat stripped-down for the sake of being accessible to a young audience. Also, it should be said that the game has very little replay value. But don’t think that I don’t like the title: This is a charming game suitable for your entire family. Review Pros Cons Unique, seasonal, and empowering game play Satisfying exploration and collection Eccentric, family-friendly humor Battles become repetitive Little replay value Rating 75% Costume Quest DLC Review – Grubbins on Ice “Grubbins on Ice,” the DLC expansion to Double Fine’s “Costume Quest,” was released on PSN and XBLA on December 21, 2010. In this game, your collection of friends ventures through one of the goblins’ interdimensional portals into their monster land, where you’ll aid in a Grubbins revolution. The format here is much the same as in “Costume Quest”: You trick-or-treat and gather candy just like before, except now the candy funds revolutionary coffers, and the houses are inhabited by goblins – some who are comrades and some who decidedly reactionary. The game offers a new breed of enemy, but the enemy soldiers are all one of four types, just as in the original game: warrior, archer, buffing priest, or damaging mage. You’ll have access to all of the original title’s eleven costumes, and over the course of this adventure, you’ll unlock three more costumes (two of which are necessary to advance the story and one of which is not) as well as eight new battle stamps and assorted new collector’s cards. There’s another apple-bobbing game and another find the hiding children quest: It’s much of the same, but with an eccentric new tileset in this alternate universe. The new costumes are cute: pirate, yeti, and eyeball. The eyeball has a neat adventuring power, which zooms the camera out a bit from the map, allowing you to see more, including hidden places that you might jump to. My gripe, though, is that the eyeball power is actually only helpful in one particular place, and your companions tell you to use the ability there, which sort of ruins the puzzle. Moreover, when I got to that spot, I hadn’t yet assembled the eyeball costume, but I was still able to divine where I needed to jump to reach the secret area – so the eyeball’s adventuring power was never useful to me. It’s a neat idea, but it was woefully underused, and it feels rather tacked on. The puzzles seem easier and more geographically contained in this expansion pack. But even if this game is less intellectually demanding (if that’s not too strong a term for the original title), it still has a great sense of humor. The final boss fight, though, is more challenging than any of the battles in the original game. Granted, one of the main reasons that I lost the battle on my first attempt was that the boss fight took me by surprise, so I hadn’t had time to change my party into their boss-killing costumes and arm them with the appropriate stamps. Still, a fun battle, and more rewarding than most of the battles in the game. My main beef with this DLC is that it is really quite short. I spent somewhere between two and three hours playing it, and I did every secondary quest, acquired every battle stamp and trading card, and won every PSN trophy (five this time, including one gold and three silver). Is the DLC worth 5 USD? It’s hard to say. If you’re jonesin’ for more “Costume Quest,” then yes, this title has all the charm of its parent game plus a few new costumes. But if you want “bang for your buck,” then this isn’t the place to invest your money. Review Pros Cons More quirky fun with costumes Too short an experience Little replay value Rating 40% –

Killzone 3 Review Round-up

Gary Steinman , Editor in Chief for PlayStation: The Official Magazine, stopped by the official PlayStation blog and has shared some very exciting news. Killzone 3 has received the perfect 10.0. Gary: There is no such thing as a perfect game. Any and all games come with their assortment of quirks and quibbles, slight shortcomings and trifling blemishes. That said, Killzone 3 comes pretty gosh darn close to perfection. The magazine not only features the Killzone 3 review, but an extensive look at MotorStorm: Apocalypse, Uncharted 3 and Tactics Ogre. Look for it on news stands February 15th. I’m extremely eager to get my hands on the single player side of this beast! This news just gets me even more pumped for launch day. GameTrailers has given Killzone 3 a 9.4. You can watch the video review here . IGN has given the game an 8.5, along with awarding it the Editors choice award. To read the review, click here . Sony’s NGP price leaked by Gamestop “Rumor”

Pictures were posted by Rick Hutnak on the GameStop Facebook page. The story and pictures are currently the hottest topic on the web. Take a look below. With a price of $299, you could purchase a PS3, so the price point is about spot on what some were hoping. What do you think? For now, this will remain nothing more than a rumor. I have spoken with my friend who works at GameStop, and he has told me that this is, in fact, exactly like it would appear. He has not gotten the update yet, so I, personally, haven’t seen this as of yet. Will keep you posted. Source: Mukyou

The Weekly Recap (January 30th-February 5th)

Recap Another big week. We had a few reviews to read, if you want to check out those. We also got a couple new Blog team members, and there are a bunch of videos to check out. FooBear went to the Dragon Age II event last week, and brought back some goodies he’s giving away on the blog (including some really cool coasters). It also seems that the NGP is still making quite the appearance in the news, reeling in from it’s unveiling a couple weeks ago. We also got a sneak peak at things to come for PlayStation Plus subscribers, as well as information on upcoming games. The Killzone 3 multiplayer open beta also released later in the week, and with it, we had a couple game day/nights. Some people claim it can’t be a beta, given how the game is already golden, but I think my assumption was correct in that they were testing potential launch day server load problems, and are ironing them out before the game’s release. Community News & Game Nights First of all, congratulations to Oly and Luke for becoming part of the PS3Blog.net team! Also, Tosh has added another feature to the site, but we’re only trying it out for now (since it’s free). If you want to rate and review movies and games, we have this whole review thing set up here . Your reviews can be as long or as short as you want, and it might even give you ideas for movies and games you might want to check out! And co-writers, be sure to check out the Posting Tips page under the Post News menu category across the top! If you have any questions or something for future tips leave a comment! The winner for the Bulletstorm Creeper nutcracker has been chosen. Thanks to FooBear, we also have another giveaway going on for a couple sets of Dragon Age II coasters and few Dragon Age: Legends beta codes. You can enter that giveaway here . The Weekly Recap (January 30th-February 5th)

Killzone 3 Can Be Completed in 4.5 Hours

Let me start by saying I don’t want something as simple as completion time to sway your decision from purchasing a game with rock solid multiplayer. There are people, however, who would like to know that Killzone 3′s Single player can be beaten in 4.5 hrs. With the review embargo being lifted as of yesterday, many reviews have been posted. I, personally, think gametrailers.com has hit the nail on the head with a solid 9.4. Reviewers have posted some of their times, have a look: Spoiler Alert: Shows Level Titles A New Beginning – 6:44 Evacuation Orders – 21:23 Pyrrhus Evac – 33:18 Six Months On – 36:39 Icy Incursion – 50:59 Stahl Arms Infiltration – 29:03 Scrapyard Shortcut – 34:43 The Reckoning – 33:17 Interception – 27:18 That’s 4hrs and 33 minutes and for you math nerds 40 seconds. This is not what I expected. Don’t forget that there’s also 70 minutes of cut scenes in the Killzone title. 5hrs 40 minutes if you don’t want to do the math. Do these times warrant a rental over a purchase? Does this change your mind in any way? Few Screens to confirm the times:

The Weekly Recap Extreme (December 19th-January 15th)

Update Due to an overall lack of interest in the recaps, I have decided to change it up a little bit. Some of the changes will be reflected here, but thanks to Tosh, the Recap process will be a lot more streamlined and I can get them out much faster than usual. This means it shouldn’t take me very long at all (well, except for maybe this one, which will be a 4 week recap, but it will get finished a lot faster than the last one). With that said, One of the updates you will see will be the formatting of the post lists. It now includes the number of comments. Of course, this is total comments, as I can’t really be bothered to look at how many comments were made for the week and which ones were made . With that said, we were also going to try to implement Likes into it as well, but it wouldn’t work, so I will be doing that the old-fashioned way. I was going to find out Most Likes through the AddThis service, which tracks the number of shares a topic got for the week, but doesn’t appear to track the number of likes. Now, a couple other updates for future recaps. The images and links usually posted at the bottom of this tab will likely be replaced . I will also be dropping the Poll Results and New Poll post and implementing it into the Weekly Recap, which means that we need more poll ideas , since it will be a weekly matter now. With that said, a few things might still change, but that’s the main stuff. Enjoy! UPDATE: Here’s the new link section! December 19th-25th If you missed it, during the Christmas weekend, we did have triple points , but only a few of you capitalized on that. Also, if you haven’t noticed, this was when we also have the ability to, essentially, pop-out the chat window, so you can browse other sites, etc and still have a window open to talk to people on the site. Some of it has changed since it initially went into effect, but you now have the ability to either keep it in the sidebar or pop it out. During this week, we had the Photo contest going on for Gran Turismo 5. Winners have since been chosen (as will be pointed out in the next week’s recap). There was also a tournament planned, but had to be postponed due to me getting the YLOD. This tournament will be resumed when I get that fixed . 15 Articles // 5 QuickNews Contributor of the Week Luke – 5 Entries QuickNews Contributor of the Week kennygk & Luke- 2 Entries Most Liked Eddie – Infamous Comic to be Released by DC Comics and Sucker Punch – 3 Likes Most Comments Eddie – Sega Holiday Sales on PSN and SNK Discounts for Playstation Plus Members – 26 Comments New COD DLC Announced – PS3 Gamers Are 2nd Best Again Madagasca on December 20th, 2010 15 Comments Infamous Comic to be Released by DC Comics and Sucker Punch Eddie L. One of the features added to the pop-out chat is the Global Activity feed included at the top, which, of course, shows off recent activity taking place throughout the site. It also automatically refreshes at fixed intervals so it stays (mostly) up to date (I think 5 minutes?). The Gran Turismo 5 Photo Contest winners were me and Oregondude. We’ll be sure to have others in the future, too! There was also a surprise points giveaway , in which Kane112 won for posting the 75,000th message.
