Dungeon Siege III is Upon Us!

The PS2 had a solid collection of hack and slash games. Baldurs Gate and Champions of Norrath to name a couple. The PlayStation 3 has had a bit of a dry spell in the genre, and things are finally picking up with the release of Two Worlds Two recently, and Dungeon Siege III right around the corner. Let’s take a look at the trailer to see what goodness we are in for. The Combat system is exactly what you would expect, with a new twist in the way of combat stances. These stances will be the key to your success or your demise. The Guardian class for example has a defensive stance where the user wields a sword and shield where the offensive stance has him wielding a two handed weapon. Each stance has its own move set. The offensive stance has a charging ability and the defensive has a shield bash for example. Now, in case you need a refresher, Obsidian are the people behind Knights of the Republic 2 and Fallout: New Vegas. The dialogue system for Dungeon Siege will be familiar to you if you have played any of those titles. Your AI team mates may often disagree with your choices, making for unique play-throughs, which is a solid choice by the developers. The developer hasn’t spilled too much on this aspect other than this: How much of a focus is story in this third game compared the last few entries? NC: It is a core focus of the game, for instance we have a full branching dialogue system like Alpha Protocol or Mass Effect. That is something that wasn’t in the first two games and is a core strength of Obsidian. It’s what we’re bringing to the franchise and one of the reasons why Square and Gas Powered wanted us to work with us. Here’s hoping that our decisions can, in fact, change the ending of the game. Dungeon Siege is slated to have a March 21 release date and is developed by Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment. NGP Games Trailer in HD

Finally we get to see some of the games coming to the NGP in glorious HD. This, I’m sure, is just a taste to come as time goes on. Even with the PSP we didn’t see some beautiful games until a few years in when companies like Square Enix pumped out the powerhouse Crisis Core and I’m sure this time we will not have any size limitations holding the games back.

Final Fantasy Overflow. XIII-2, Versus, Type-0 New Info

Tons of info has been released for some up and coming Final Fantasy games. Some long overdue, some new. Today we have info for Final Fantasy XIII Versus, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0. The Versus news is very welcome as this game has just taken so long in development. Hopefully we get a 2011 release. Final Fantasy XIII Versus * The actual battle screen in the final game will show character names. * Some areas regarding how the battle screen shows commands will probably change for the final. * Magic has different effects depending on the character who uses it. * A young blonde male character shown in the magazine’s screenshots is good with guns. He alone has aiming controls and can aim for enemy weak spots. * When other characters use guns, they have just a normal lock-on. * The game has a large number of weapons. Main character Noctis can use them all. * Your battle party can have up to three members. However, the members who aren’t taking part in the battle will join in on conversations. * There are more party members than the four shown in the magazine. However, the game doesn’t have a massive number of party members. * Main character Noctis is not “cool.” He’s just a normal youth. He feels “I am strong,” but he’s not as strong as he thinks. * Some segments of the trailer show natural landscapes. These are like the fields you encounter in other games. The game will have time progression: morning, afternoon, evening and night. * Contrary to some theories, the dragon rider character who appears in the trailer is not heroine Stella. Nomura says he wouldn’t show Stella in such a state. The character you see in that sequence is an enemy. * You can steal army vehicles for your use. You can ride air ships, cars and Chocobos. * The blonde character shown in the trailer is Noctis’s friend. The other two characters are friends from Noctis’s childhood. The person with glasses is like Noctis’s tactician. * You’ll recall that someone in the trailer says “You’re not fit to be king,” or something to that effect. This statement is not directed at Noctis. (I think everyone assumed it was!) * Nomura says something along the lines of: This year, we have Type-0 and XIII-2, so please forget about Versus for a while. He asked that people be patient and understand that they’re trying to do something incredible. * At the earliest, we could see more from Versus XIII at E3. Final Fantasy XIII-2 *ATB returns *Won’t feature jpop feel like X-2. *Difficulty selection *Other characters will return, but expect them to be different. * XIII-2′s story begins in Gran Pulse after the ending of XIII. * The story will feel like it expands out from the after story that was included in the booklet with Xbox 360′s Final Fantasy XIII International. * Outside of Lightning, other characters will appear in the game in unexpected forms. Some will see major changes. * XIII-2 is a full sequel. You’ll learn some of the things that took place in the background scenes of XIII. * The story will be more dark and mysterious than XIII’s. * The story will focus on the goddess Etro. * The game will not have the pop feel of Final Fantasy X-2 (I think this means no dancing Lightning booooo) * The battle system will be an evolved form of XIII’s ATB system. * They’re listening to opinions both inside and outside of Square Enix and from outside of Japan regarding characters, story and interface. * There may be a difficulty setting. Final Fantasy Type-0 * The keyword for the battle system is “Magic in Action.” While you have weapons, magic is main. * A main concept is “It’s not necessary for everyone to gather.” The game has a multiplayer system that can be enjoyed by solo players too. * You can join other players’ games for three minutes. While you can extend this, Type-0 is not the type of game where you play together with other players continuously. * The game will have 12+2 main characters. This means that in addition to the 12 main characters, there will be two characters, Makina and Rem, in a different framework (I’m not sure what that means). These 12+2 characters will be your controllable party. * You can have up to three characters out in battle simultaneously. Once someone dies, other members will come out to help. * Until you come to the battle field, you move around the world map and execute a strategy. * As you play on your own, other players will gradually take part in the battle. * When you help other players, you earn points. * In general, your full party heads to the battle field together.

Lara Croft Raiding the PS3

A little earlier today Sonia Im, the Assistant Director of Public Relations at Square Enix dropped by and informed everyone at the Official PS3 Blog that on March 22nd the PS3 is going to be getting a remastered HD version of Tomb Raider Anniversary, Legend as well as the final chapter in the trilogy Underworld all for only $39.99. One thing that I can say is these remastered versions are pretty cheap. Sure they are older games, but how often do you actually get 3 games in HD for only $40? This exclusive Tomb Raider Trilogy is also going to have a static theme pack, Lara Croft and Viking Thrall avatars for PlayStation Home as well as trailers that go behind the scenes of all three titles.

Chrono Cross Coming to PSN!

The Square Enix Members Twitter now has 20,000 followers, and Square Enix is going to be celebrating with its next big PSN Game Archives release, Chrono Cross. Unfortunately this isn’t Chrono Trigger, but this was one heck of a game and had an amazing soundtrack that I still listen to today. SE did not give a release date, but look for it soon.

Final Fantasy XIV For The PS3 On Hold

It’s no secret that the PC version of Final Fantasy XIV has been plagued by negative press by both players an critics alike. The mmorpg currently has a Metacritic rating of 51% due to numerous poor reviews by sites like IGN ( 5.5 ), Gamespot ( 4.0 ) and 1UP ( D+.) User reviews of the game left on Amazon Japan and several other online retailers in the country were equally unfavorable. It’s been over two months since the game was released but today it appears that Square Enix is finally ready to attempt to fix a game that some have labeled as one of the biggest disappointments of the year. The President and CEO of the company announced on the Lodestone FFXIV player website that steps are in place to fix the PC version of the game. These steps include new leadership and a restructured development team as the previous producer of the game,Hiromichi Tanaka, has stepped down. Square Enix President/CEO Yoichi Wada: “Regarding the PlayStation 3, it is not our wish to release a simple conversion of the Windows version in its current state, but rather an update that includes all the improvements we have planned. For that reason, we have made the difficult decision to delay the release of the PlayStation 3 version beyond the originally announced date of March 2011.” FFXIV’s new producer/director, Naoki Yoshida, also stated that the “PlayStation 3 release will be delayed until we are confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the FINAL FANTASY name for users on all supported platforms.” It’s unclear how long the release of the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV will be in limbo but, in the meantime, PC gamers have been granted with an extended free-trial period of the game. Head over to Loadstone for more details.

Official Review: Funky Lab Rat

Hydravision has released Funky Lad Rat exclusively on the PSN both in Europe and the US, a very special game in time for the Christmas rush. The story for the game is simple: a lab rat breaks a container thus having access to some miraculous pills which allows said rat to grow super smart while, at the same time, gaining power over time and space in a funky way… or at least that’s  what I got after watching the starting cut-scene. This is a physics-based puzzle game, and we all know that a good puzzle game does NOT need a storyline. And a good puzzle game this is. Here’s the trailer so you can better understand what I’ll be talking about: All done? Good. Your main objective is to find a way to get from your starting position, let’s call this point A, to the exit doorway, the final point B if you will. While doing this, you can grab some pills that have been scattered across each room, hence our objective C. So to sum it up, the game is as easy as A, B, C. Or A, C, B since you want to get those pills. Well, you get the idea. You need the pills to open up the next world in your patch and it’s a good thing that you don’t need them all to finish the game since some of them will really require that you constantly be “in the Zone” and focus 100% to achieve your goal. Some of the pills, as well as the exit doorway, are covered in small clouds and you must shine a light on them with the Right Analog Stick before you can collect them, adding an extra strategy element to the flowing gameplay. There is a total of nine main worlds, labeled from 0 to 8, as well as a final XL level (which I really, really liked). If you obtain enough pills, you can even gain access to world 9, an extra set of levels as a thank you for your time and dedication. At first, there are only 8 pills per screen but that number soon increases to 10 and then finally goes all the way up to 15 pills per level, which also increases the difficulty. You can either decide to get to the exit without obtaining many pills in hopes of making up for them on a later level or you could focus on them one at a time until you’ve done a perfect run. Perfect runs are actually what the game requires you to perform for one of the trophies, expecting you to grab all the pills AND getting to the exit doorway without making any mistakes at all. So, why is it hard to obtain all the pills and make it to the exit? Well, the first couple of levels make it easy for you to figure out a solution, but later on, physics really start to play a huge part in how you must tackle a room. Pressing the Square button for 3 seconds allows you to quickly restart a level in case you’ve made a huge mistake, but you eventually get access to even more time-defying powers. Triangle is used for Zapping, a power that gets you to skip a level and come back to it later so you can still go ahead and try to solve the rest of the game. Circle will be your most used button since it makes time come to a complete stop which in turns grants you the opportunity to move some items around the room for better puzzle solving. Not everything can be moved, but thankfully, those that can are easy to spot since they really stand out from the others. Finally, you’ve got the X button, your new second best friend. X rewinds time all the way back to the last time you used Circle. Missed a jump by that much? Rewind. Falling block not falling slow enough? Rewind and place it higher. Found your end at a fiery death thanks to all the red-hot panels set oh so near the pills? Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewind. The graphics in the game are colorful and do their job just right. Won’t win Hydravision any awards but we must always consider that in a puzzle game it’s not always about the flash but about the razzle-dazzle and this game has it in spades. Finally, you can control the game either with the Dualshock or with the Move controller.  For the purpose of this review, only the Dualshock 3 configuration was used but it’s nice to see developers offer the option to do so, specially on PSN. I had a great time playing Funky Lab Rat. Download the demo if you still haven’t made up your mind about it but I highly recommend you add it to your collection since it’s only $9.99 and it will provide you with hours of fun-fun. I would have wanted more XL levels here and there (to work as a boss level even), but as with all games, there’s bound to be some areas that could be improved. That’s what sequels are for! Review Pros Cons Fun game that is smooth as silk Levels are short enough that you can play in small bursts Price is just right Could have used more XL levels Trophy(Less than 22 stops) Last Level is Hard as Hell Rating 85% DISCLAMER A Copy of the game was supplied by the publisher for this review. Completed every level in the game (including those in World 9), obtaining a total of 959 pills so far.
