Review: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Before I get to my review of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I highly recommend watching this video. It shows a great deal of the way the game is played, and how there are many different choices and ways to play the game. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a prequel to Eidos Interactive’s critically acclaimed, action role-playing game Deus Ex. In Deus Ex: Human Revolution: You play Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT specialist who’s been handpicked to oversee the defensive needs of one of America’s most experimental biotechnology firms. Your job is to safeguard company secrets, but when a black ops team breaks in and kills the very scientists you were hired to protect, everything you thought you knew about your job changes. Badly wounded during the attack, you have no choice but to become mechanically augmented and you soon find yourself chasing down leads all over the world, never knowing who you can trust. At a time when scientific advancements are turning athletes, soldiers and spies into super enhanced beings, someone is working very hard to ensure mankind’s evolution follows a particular path. You need to discover where that path lies. Because when all is said and done, the decisions you take, and the choices you make, will be the only things that can change it. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is definitely about choices. Set in 2027, the game starts with you returning to work at Sarif Industries, with the job of hunting down the group responsible for the attack and your near death. Adam has been almost fully augmented with enhanced body parts. Everything from your limbs and eyes, to your lungs, have been replaced with new cyborg like parts. Part first person shooter, part RPG, when you gain enough experience points, you are awarded with a Praxis point. This Praxis point can then be used to upgrade an existing augmentation. Want to jump up nine feet? Want to see through walls? Want to shoot bullets from your chest? Want to become better at hacking computers? Well those are just a few of your choices when upgrading an augmentation. The upgrades you will want to choose, will also depend greatly upon how you want to play the game. In Deus Ex: human Revolution, you are basically given a point to reach on the map, corresponding to your current objective. Sneak in here and read this file, meet this person to get a clue, save the hostages, etc. How you go about getting to that objective can vary greatly. The game is primarily played from a first person view, but when taking cover, by hiding up against wall, or behind objects, it switches to third person. The game can be played, with the exception of boss battles, completely as a stealth type game, reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid. There is even a trophy for completing the game without killing anyone by your own hand, and another for not sounding any alarms. The game can also be played, the way I did, as a tactical shooter. Playing it like you would Call of Duty, with guns blazing, and taking 30 bullets before dying, will not work with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. You would run out of ammo too quick, and also die very quick. If you are the type to want to kill everyone that moves, you will need to plan your attacks wisely. Shoot these three guys, then duck behind cover and wait for the next opening, for example. Or, take someone out quietly from behind, drag them to where no one will see them, and search them for credits, ammo, documents, or enhancements. Guns, which are also upgradeable, can be silenced, and used to quietly take out an enemy. Another way to quietly take out an enemy is via melee. Melee is all done by pressing the circle button, for a quiet knockout, or holding the button, for a louder kill. Your chosen action is then shown as a third person cut scene. These scenes vary widely, sometimes choking the victim out, sometimes breaking an arm and hitting the throat, and even, with an upgraded augmentation, taking two enemies out at the same time. At first, I was a little disappointed, as I wanted to be more involved in the action, but as I progressed, I actually wanted to see these scenes more and more. They were all done very well, however there were some issues with them. A couple times, Adam would come out of a wall, as a graphical glitch, and sometimes, no matter what angle the enemy had been approached, Adam would always appear from behind. It was also fun planning a melee attack at times. If I run toward these three guys, I can shoot the one in the middle with my silenced pistol, and as the other two turn to see why he fell, melee attack them. Or, do I just sneak past them? More choices…. Getting past enemies by shooting, or by stealth, isn’t the only choice in the game. Getting to your objectives opens many choices as well. For instance, getting to someone inside a guarded club could be done in a number of ways. Do you bribe the doorman 500 credits for a club pass, or do you just take him out and steal the pass? If you do and someone sees, you might have to fight my way to the objective. If you have augmented your strength, you could move one of the heavy dumpsters and crawl in through an air duct, or the sewers, bypassing the guards completely. If you have augmented your legs for jumping, you could jump to the fire escape, climb to the roof, and sneak in from there. No matter what choice you take, you will probably come across a locked door, and/or an alarm. You will also come across locked computers and safes. These locked items, all have terminals that can be used to open them, either via a pass code, or by hacking. Each terminal has a rating between 1 and 5. Only by upgrading your augmentations are you allowed to access the higher terminals. Pass codes can be obtained from emails on computers, or from datapads on fallen foes. Hacking in Human Revolution opens up a mini-game. The mini-game can be quite fun, and very rewarding. The game is best described by watching this video. Once the terminal has been hacked, the door can be opened, the alarm system can be shut off, or the computer can be used. On computers you will find either emails with information, or security access. With security access, you are able to view surveillance cameras, shut down motion sensors, and even control robotic defense systems if your augmentations allow. Although Human Revolution is not completely open world, you do have the availability to explore each city as you see fit. Finding the right person in the right place can also open up many different side quests available in the game. These side quests also allow many choices. At one point, to solve a dilemma, you are put in a situation to help or hinder someone. To help, you need to either kill or frame someone. Each choice has a different result, and reward, including trophies. Many of the side quests actually have two different trophies available depending on your choices. Some people you meet in the game will need to be persuaded into doing something for you, or revealing something to you. This is called conversational combat. There are three different statements or questions at each stage that you need to pick carefully to get what you want. There’s also a social augmentation that helps you to read a person, helping you to make the correct choices. If you choose wrong, you will need to figure a different way to meet that objective. Many objectives, and many different ways to meet those objectives allow for many different ways of playing the game. You can play through Deus Ex: HR multiple times, and have a completely different experience each time. There are even four different endings to the game. Even if your not up to replaying it, Human Revolution will take you anywhere from 25 to 40 hours to play through once. Over all, playing through Deus Ex: HR was a great experience. Beside the few glitches mentioned above, the only other issue I had with the game was the long loading times when reloading a saved game. I would definitely recommend Deus Ex: Human Revolution to any one that enjoys a good game. I feel any FPS fan, and those that enjoy tactical shooters like Metal Gear Solid, would really enjoy it. Review Pros Cons Choices, choices, choices! Replayability Customizable Gameplay Very Fun and Addictive Some Graphical Glitches Long Loading Times Rating 94%

New Technology From Euclideon That Could Change How Games Look For The Next Generation

Euclideon, an Australian tech company created in 2010 is ready to show a work in progress video of their “Unlimited Detail”, a new proposal on how videogame graphics can be created in the next couple of years. Unlimited Detail is a technology which was secretly in development for many years. It enables computers to display infinite geometry at real time frame rates and has made many prominent appearances in the media, in magazines including New Scientist, Wired, Popular Science, Hyper, Atomic and PC Power Play amongst others. What do you think after watching the video? Is this something real enough for it to be a part of the next round of consoles and their games or will it end up skipping a generation or maybe even not being applied at all?

Sony Buys Sucker Punch Productions

Scott Rohde, senior vice president at Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios America revealed in an interview for MSNBC on Monday that Sony Computer Entertainment had acquired Sucker Punch Productions. The bottom line is, when you’ve got a group that’s been as successful as Sucker Punch, we want to ensure that we keep them in the fold. It’s that simple. It’s hard to find high quality developers like these guys. This move ensures that all games developed by Sucker Punch will remain exclusive to Sony’s platforms going forward. Sucker Punch is well known for their work on the inFamous series as well as the Sly Cooper games. The acquisition makes Sucker Punch the 16th internally-owned studio at SCE’s Worldwide Studios.

Playstation Vita Features Explained

It goes without saying that the PS Vita is jam packed with features to not just enhance our gaming but also build on social networks in conjunction with gaming. The above video displays some of the many features that the PS vita will be boasting at launch. First up we see one of the most popular features (and on of my personal favorite) which is cloud game saves that work between the PS3 and the PS Vita. Ruin is one of the first games to be shown to use this new system. You can start a game on the PS3, save, upload to the cloud and continue the same game on your Vita. The next feature that is shown is Near. Near is a social aspect to the Vita that allows you to communicate in different ways. In the video you see a guy walking through a park, he messages a friend and tells him to check the park out. When his friend arrives at the park, he finds a gift that was left behind by the guy who sent the message. The gift was a Little Big Planet limited edition sticker. You then see a lady who is searching for new friends. The PS Vita can search for nearby Vita’s and allow you to communicate with them and add them to your friends list. The next feature that is shown is an oldie but goldie, party chat. You can invite several friends into one voice chat/video chat room even while they are playing a game. The video ends with showing off some of the basic features of the Vita such as the touch screen, back touch pad and motion controls. A very impressive machine indeed.

Red Johnson’s Chronicles: Episode 1 Review

Metropolis, capital of crime. Private Detective Red Johnson is stretched to his limits after shots were heard from Drownedman’s Bridge. Explore strange worlds, find and use clues that will lead you to the truth in this unique game with stunning backdrops. Question suspects, push them over the edge and confront them in breathtaking action scenes. But don’t forget you also have a brain. In this 8 to 10 hours long adventure/investigation, you’ll discover a world in which everything is dark, sharp and deadly. Even humor. * Compulsive scenario with deadly humor * Between 8 to 10 hours of gameplay * Amazing graphics * Appealing characters with great voice acting * Original puzzles that totally fit the script * Scalable help system for beginners and core gamers alike From the studio that brought you The Pooyos, a fun game series for children 3 to 5 (“Because your 3 to 5 year-olds also deserve to play quality games”) we now get… a noir adventure game. Diversity is the name of the game, and a game that is diverse is what Lexis Numérique will provide to us. Love how this next quote from the sums up who they’re aiming at with Red Johnson Chronicles: If you’re only into first person shooters, Red Johnson’s Chronicles is not for you. Most of the time, point and click games have a set path to follow and puzzles can only be completed with the same solution every time which could put off many gamers… but the same can be said about any game (you only shoot and take cover; you only punch and kick walking from left to right; you only jump and run until you reach your goal, etc.) so let’s keep that in perspective before diving into this game. Want more of a background on the game and on Lexis Numérique? Here’s a Q&A session with the developer , brought to you by the PS Blog. You play as Red Johnson, Private Investigator (as in P and I put together). You investigate privately to uncover the truth below the dirt you got on someone you once knew from before the time when… ah, a cop just showed up at the office! Seems to be that the police are swamped with work to be able to do a proper job on a new murder case that just got dropped onto them, and now Red Johnson must take a payment from the taxpayer’s money to get to the bottom of this and uncover the ending to what is always a fun premise to a game: a who dunnit scenario! This is one of those games we like to call “A Point… And A Click”. You move a magnifying glass around the screen looking for objects or people to interact with, point at them… and then click with the X button to investigate further. If it’s an object, you’ll take it. If it’s a person, you won’t take them. Simple, right? When other humans are involved in the formula you’ll strike up a gentle and kind conversation to try and get insight into what has happened that led to someone being murdered at the bridge. Conversations take place on a separate screen with a special focus on the participants and a fade effect placed on the other objects around them to really drive the point home: LISTEN CAREFULLY at conversations so you can select the proper option from the dialog tree! Choosing poorly can make things end in a very bad way . We’re in the presence of a very good looking PSN game that has a style of it’s own and likes to mix up the way the screen provides us with specific input. The game itself is colorful and alive, but cutscenes play out in black and white and this certainly gives it a different vibe that delivers on it’s “noir” premise. When you click on a stair, an alley or an out of the way path and the view switches around to show you a different take on the scenery or to end up changing to another place. The voice acting is something else I also liked as each character has a distinctive voice which helps keep things interesting. Some people have expressed how the voices can be a bit over the top or “stereotypical” but in a game like this there’s only so much room for trying to come up with the perfect mix of style, substance and uniqueness… and balance everything accordingly. When closely inspecting objects, left analog stick moves the cursor and the right analog stick allows you to move the object to look for clues and information on how to solve all your problems (presented in this first episode. Won’t solve all your real life problems. Please use responsively under the supervision of a Beanie cap wearing PI). This “left stick-right stick” control method is available when solving puzzles as you can tell from the first puzzle you run into which requires you to set the proper combination to open a padlock (no, open sesame doesn’t count) and you use the left analog to move between each set of numbers while the right analog lets you choose the number itself. You can even shake the Dualshock 3 (remember this one started as the Sixaxis?) to help you solve a puzzle or two. All these options make the game feel more dynamic. There’s another element in the game that helps us make a better use of all the evidence we’ve located: the migthy analyzer! Back at your HQ office you can use this marvelous piece of equipment to… do an analysis of the objects you’ve found. You never know when a clue will be available in that discarded can of soda! You can also compare two objects to see if there’s a match between, say, a discarded bullet casing and a gun you found so you can consider if it’s part of the investigation or not. And then, you run into your first Quick time Events (QTE). What are those, you ask? Here you go: Quick Time Events (QTE) : They’re quick, they’re timed and they’re eventful. Shenmue showed them to us, God of War made them it’s own and Red Johnson takes them out for a spin again. When you meet each of the major characters a QTE will start and you must get it completely right to progress (making no mistakes gets you a trophy but making a mistake on every single part of each QTE also gets you one… you know what that means? Play the game twice for both trophies!). If you miss any segment you have to start all over but since they’re quick (hence the QTE name) it’s not like you’ll loose too much time learning the sequence. You’re graded depending on how you do on QTEs, conversations and puzzle solving. Less mistakes or being faster gets you a better grade, a better grade gets you more money. Get mo money, get mo problems. Get a final A grade once you finish? Trophy unlocked! You can save anytime which is great in case you have to stop playing for any reason. It also helps greatly when solving puzzles since you can save before starting one and reload if you get a very bad grade (wink wink, nudge nudge). It’s very difficult to keep track of everything and remember every single detail about a conversation you might have had during the first hour of the game when you’re on hour 5 already which is why you’re provided with a notebook ton help you sort things out. The notebook contains lots of information (more of which is constantly added and you can tell that thanks to a file folder icon that pops up on screen) and you can access it with the Select Button to see where you’re coming from, what you’ve learned so far on the case and what needs to be done to move on ahead. Here’s a brief description of each of the sections available once you open up the notebook: Objectives: A list of all the things that you have to do in order to solve the case Notes: General information about pretty much everything that relates to the case at hand. People: Details and description of the people you’ve met and that play a part on how this story develops. Clues: Shows all the puzzles you’ve unlocked and solved and also gives you the chance to, should you ever be stuck on an objective, purchase hints in exchange for your hard earned money… and doing so won’t block you out of any of the trophies! Map: Allows you to move between the different areas available in the game. Progress: Handy list that shows you how much you’ve done and how much is still left to do. Great for us trophy hunters since we can tell how many puzzles or conversations we’re missing. I’m soooo glad that adventure games have been on such a huge comeback in the last couple of years and Red Johnson Chronicles: Episode 1 (how soon until Episode 2?) does the genre good. 7 to 10 hours of total depending on how good you are at point and click games, great voice acting, a very nice looking environment, a colorful cast of characters and lots and lots of puzzles make this a great game to add to your collection. Supreme Court Rules: California Can’t Ban Violent Video Games

Looks like another win is in the books for the Video Game Industry. The supreme court voted 7-2 to uphold a federal appeals court decision to throw out the proposed ban. Read the rest of the story below. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to let California regulate the sale or rental of violent video games to children, saying governments do not have the power to “restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed” despite complaints about graphic violence. . On a 7-2 vote, the high court upheld a federal appeals court decision to throw out the state’s ban on the sale or rental of violent video games to minors. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Sacramento had ruled that the law violated minors’ rights under the First Amendment, and the high court agreed. . “No doubt a state possesses legitimate power to protect children from harm,” said Justice Antonin Scalia, who wrote the majority opinion. “But that does not include a free-floating power to restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed.” . The California law would have prohibited the sale or rental of violent games to anyone under 18. Retailers who violated the act would have been fined up to $1,000 for each infraction. . More than 46 million American households have at least one video-game system, with the industry bringing in at least $18 billion in 2010. . Unlike depictions of “sexual conduct,” Scalia said there is no tradition in the United States of restricting children’s access to depictions of violence, pointing out the violence in the original depiction of many popular children’s fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Snow White. . Hansel and Gretel kill their captor by baking her in an oven, Cinderella’s evil stepsisters have their eyes pecked out by doves and the evil queen in Snow White is forced to wear red hot slippers and dance until she is dead, Scalia said. . “Certainly the books we give children to read — or read to them when they are younger — contain no shortage of gore,” Scalia added. . But Justice Clarence Thomas, who dissented from the decision along with Justice Stephen Breyer, said the majority read something into the First Amendment that isn’t there. . “The practices and beliefs of the founding generation establish that “the freedom of speech,” as originally understood, does not include a right to speak to minors (or a right of minors to access speech) without going through the minors’ parents or guardians,” Thomas wrote.
